Sharp shooting pain in lower back - what is this?

So a new pain has popped up this week (ahhh, the joys of pregnancy). Every once in a while, maybe 2 or 3 times a day, I get this sharp shooting pain in my very lower back/upper buttocks area (on one side). It feels like I'm being electrocuted, but it only lasts a couple seconds and then it's gone.

I'll bring it up at my next appointment, but in the meantime has anyone else experienced this, or have any idea what it is? I'm *hoping* it means maybe baby is dropping a bit and pressing on some weird nerve or something?? But I really don't know... Thoughts?

  • Sciatica came to mind first.  Does the pain ever shoot down your leg?

  • i know I get a sharp pain near my tailbone and lower back "sometimes" when I get out of bed from a laying position, or when I stand up from a sitting position. I'm not sure if its the same thing, but this is a pain that pregnancy has brought me.
  • Def sounds like it could be your sciatic nerve, but maybe your doctor will know for sure  :)

There's no pain in my leg... The lowest it seems to go is just to the side of my tailbone. And it only seems to happen when I'm walking around. Hmmmm...

  • I get this from time to time and assumed it was my sciatic nerve. It always takes me by surprise and I let out a sudden "OUCH!" and it's gone before I finish saying it!

  • I have been having HORRIBLE pain in my lower back, butt, leg for the past month. no fun at all. My Dr. said it was siactic nerve pain and I could try heat, ice, changing position, not sitting too long, not lifting things, not standing too long...basically there isn't much that helps except delivering the baby! But it's all worth it I guess!

  • I had this- for me, it was a muscle spasm.  A heating pad and Tylenol worked.
