3rd Trimester

My water just broke...

am I supposed to go to the hospital now even though I don't have timed contractions?  I remember my peri saying to go if contractions are every 5 min. apart and take my breath away or if my water breaks.  But I feel wierd going in when I don't have timeable contractions.  I have been getting a few here and there this morning.  Do I have time to do my hair and makeup and eat before going :)

Re: My water just broke...

  • If you're not GBS positive you probably don't have to go in yet but I'm sure you should give your doctor a call and let them know what happened and they'll advise you. Good luck and congrats!

  • Call your doctor and get ready to go to the hospital...
  • You probably have time, but you need to go.  There is a 24 hr window to deliver once your water breaks because of the risk on infection.  My moms water broke and she never got contractions.  They had to put her on pitocin to get it going.
  • i was told that when your water breaks you go!  Good luck!
  • I was told I could stay home 24 hours after my water broke (I'm GBS - ) , but to call my midwife to let her know at least.
  • from the mouth of my stepmother [who is a L&D nurse]: GO NOW! haha, she says no matter what your doing as soon as your water breaks go to the hospital!

  • I'd call labor & delivery and ask.  Most likely they will tell you to come in, but I'm guessing you don't have to race there.

  • You can't be serious. Call your freakin doctor.
  • i'd call your doc and let them know your status. you are still a little on the early side so they might want you to get checked sooner.
  • I think you have time to do your hair and make-up...but I suggest calling your doctor and checking with them first.
  • Are you Group B positive? ?If yes, then you definitely need to go to the hospital now.?

I would probably put a call into the Dr and let them know your water has broken and see what they recommend.

Honestly, unless you're starving I wouldn't eat. They let me eat until midnight the night I was induced.. at 3am I started throwing everything up because of the contractions (and I hadn't even had pitocin).

    ?

  • Call your doc, but if you're not having contractions yet you can prob hang out at home for a bit yet. But once your water breaks they usually want the baby out within 24 hours to prevent infection. Good luck to you!

  • Call your dr and ask.  Mine doesn't want you to come in unless your contrax are 5 minutes apart, or it has been a while (12+ hours, I think) with no start to them.

Yes Are you just sitting around now in wet pants????????

  • call your doctor.  some want you at the hospital if your water has broken to reduce the risk of infection.

    good luck!!

  • My doula says that until you are in ACTIVE labor, you do not have to go...but you may want to call your doc and let them know ...YAY!! Baby is coming!
  • if im not mistaken you're supposed to go to the hospital when your water breaks contraction or not, because baby needs to be born within 24 hours, or the risk of infection goes up. ( I could be wrong, but I seem to remember that from prenatal classes the firstr time around)

you were kidding about the makeup right? lol

    Expecting #3 next spring!
  • Call your doctor and best of luck!

  • When my water broke they made me stay at the hospital. They put me on pitocin to start contractions. I would call your Dr and head to the hospital.
  • You don't have to go in immediately, but you do need to call your OB and let him know. He will want you to come in w/in the next few hours.
Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • call your doctor and ask. We were told to go in if my water brakes, but others say their doctors have different orders for them.
  • I wouldn't be so eager to do makeup or my hair, but definitely do eat something!!! You could be in for a long haul (or not!) and most hospitals won't feed you much (if anything) during l&d.

  • Be sure to make time to shave your lady bits, do your makeup, and freshen up!  Wouldn't want to gross out a nurse or anything... Devil
  • I'd call your doctor just based on the huge myths and misinformation you are getting in this very post.
  • my doc said the times to call were when the water breaks, you  have a bloody show or you have contractions 5 min apart for 1 hour. They may have you go in to the dr. office to check you or send you right to l&d. It does make a difference if you are strep b positive though!

LOL I was just re-reading and see all the different information that each Dr/MW gives their patients.. it's odd to see how different they all are. Some say stay home.. some say go now.. Some say you have to have baby within 24 hours of water breaking (which is what my Dr says) and then I think I read one that says it's ok within 24 hours...?

Just another reason to call your own Dr. ?

The smartest thing said in this post.

I am shocked at the number of people pretty much saying "[insert random thing you think you know about what she should do]. OH and also call your doctor." Indifferent

     Agree!

Reading other comments, is interesting to see what other doctors say. In our prenatal classes we were told not to run to hospital when water brakes beacuse they will send you home if you are not dilated enough.. unless water is greenish, too much bleeding (spotting is ok, constant bleeding no) or you are strep B positive. The midwife also told us we can eat something ligth, take a shower, sleep, etc until contractions start to get close (5 minutes apart). We can call the maternity guard at the hospital (the only one in town) and let them know what is happening, so if they consider they can tell you to stay at home or go to the hospital.

  • GOOD LUCK BY THE WAY! YEAH FOR YOU AND YOUR BABIES! :)

  • I hope by now you've called your OB and are most likely on your way to the hospital for the grand finale!
