3rd Trimester

stressful work situation

I have had high BP and have been told that I need to try to take it easy. I work at a copy center that gets fairly high stress at times. We are short staffed and have a couple people taking vacation in the next few weeks. At a time when I am wanting to cut back and ensure that I can work a little longer I am suddenly back to 40hrs a week and frequently working with just one other person. I like my job and definitely feel a responsibility to do what I can but I am really worried that this schedule for the next few weeks in going adversely affect my already high blood pressures. The hard part is that there is no help available from other centers. I just worry about voicing these concerns to my already overstressed boss.

Thanks for letting me vent. Any advice you can give would be appreciated.

Re: stressful work situation

  • I would voice your concern to your boss.  Much better to take it easy now then go out on bedrest early.  I had two high blood pressure readings and now go in weekly.  Last appointment the midwife (not who I normally see) wanted me to leave work really soon and said not to plan on working past 37 weeks.  I told my boss about the high readings so she has a heads up too.  She would rather have me take it a little easier than have to leave work weeks earlier then expected.

     Good luck!

  • Its easier said than done but just try not to let it get to you.  Just take deep breaths and remember it is just a job.  NO job is more important than your health or the baby's.  You might not be able to control your work envirornment, but you can control your reaction to it.  Make sense?  So if a stressful situation arises, take a step back and tell yourself that in the grand scheme of things its not worth stressing over.

  • High blood pressure is nothing to mess with.... if your doc told you to keep it easy, you really need to keep it easy. Do not put yourself and baby in jeopardy because of your job. What I would do is go to your boss now and tell him/her that you have been told to take it easy. If you think you are up to it, tell your boss you plan to work out your schedule but obviously your health and the babies health are the top priority. This will give her a heads up and put a bug in her ear that she may need to look into finding coverage should it become too much....  I would get a BP monitor that you can bring to work with you, and check it periodically. If your BP is too high as a result of your work, then cut back!
  • I don't have any advise, but sympathy for you.  My job has a high stress level and it has started to effect my BP.  I try my best to not let it get to me but I sometimes I can't control it.  All that helps me is to think "I'm otta here soon" and let things go.

I used to work at Kinkos in college.  I loved my job there but certain times of the year it would be hell.  Godd luck.

  • Like others have said, your health and the health of the baby is most important. I just had to tell my boss that due to high bp and signs of pre-e, my doctor may be putting me on bed rest or a limited work schedule. Thankfully, my boss said, your health is more important than anything that needs to get done around here. ::sighs of relief:: Would your doctor write you a note stating that he's requiring you to work less..would that help any? I'm sure it will work out in the end, but be honest and upfront with your boss, don't leave him/her in the dark!
