Babies: 0 - 3 Months

At what point can you determine LO's eye color?

At what point can you be sure that their eye color is set? I know that a lot of newborns have a blue hue to their eyes, but it can change up to a certain age.

?

  • I always thought it was 2 years, but my doctor told me on Saturday that it was 6 months.

  • I have always heard it was up to a year, but I really think it's different among children. I would think by close to a year old, it should be pretty clear, though.

I just googled and found this:

Question: Why Do a Baby's Eyes Change Colors? Many new mothers are excited about their infant's light, blue eyes, but are surprised when they change to a darker color. Why does this happen?Answer: An infant's eye color is determined by a substance called melanin. Melanin is a dark pigment contained in the iris, the structure that controls how much light is allowed into the eye. The color of the iris is determined by the amount of melanin in the iris. Light eyes have very little pigment, whereas darker eyes have a lot. In newborns, the pigmentation process of the iris is not yet complete. Babies with darker skin are usually born with dark eyes that stay relatively dark. Iris color in lighter-skinned babies is usually a blue or bluish-gray color at birth, then change as they grow. Melanin production changes during the first year of life, usually resulting in a darker, deeper eye color.Permanent eye color is not set until a baby is at least nine months old, so wait until your child's first birthday to determine what color they will be.An infant's eye color is influenced by the eye color of their parents. Eye color is often studied in the field of genetics because of its inheritance patterns, but is still not fully understood.

  • I read up to 2 years.  Every day DS has those beautiful blue eyes is a good day to me.  I really hope he keeps them.  I've been doing Punnett squares in my head for months trying to figure out the odds of him having light eyes.  DH has brown eyes (which are lovely), and I have green eyes.  I know brown is dominant, but DH's mom also has green eyes and my entire family is blue- or green-eyed.  I really hope DS's eyes either stay blue or turn green.
    I HAVE CHILDREN.
  • I was always told that the color sets at about a year.  DD had blue eyes from the get go and after the nine month mark, the pedi told me that most likely they would stay that way.  DS has steel gray/blue eyes right now, so I guess only time will tell if they will also stay blue...
