 I never got one untill DD was 3 or 4 months old.

I would think so, as long as you wrap them nicely and play some music maybe from a radio, I would think they will be fine, I'm sure alot of babies have survived without them...

I am making my own.

At walmart they have these craft kits to make little birds out of puff balls so I am going to make those and go to a thrift store and seek out an old mobile I can change.. or just make one that I have to turn myself.

Mobiles are something you can slide on.. it's not a "needed" item

You don't need it, get a rattle and a little stuffed animal and your baby is good to go!

I'd say so!  We don't have one for our baby.

Sure thing!  We never really used DD's, but she did (and still does) LOVE her FP rainforest soother... if you're able to save up for one.

I would not consider it an essential item, but if you want one just wait and get one when you can afford it.
