breast infection??

*I also posted on the breastfeeding board, but didn't get any feedback...

I think I have a breast infection. Although, my DD is nine months old, and I was wondering if that is kind of late to be getting a breast infection. I had one when she was really young, and I this is very similar. I am feeling kind of flu like, and my left breast is really sore, tender, warm & has a red streak on it. I obviously can't call my doctor right now, but I've left a message with my friend who is an ob/gyn. I just want her opinion. I've googled some, but of course, as usual I get all kinds of info! I'd rather just have your wonderful opinions & hear about your experiences. This will help me rest easy tonight, and hopefully get some meds in the morning. I guess my only questios are - does this sound like a breast infection? is it odd to get one after breastfeeding for so long?

    I would call your doc.  You can get infections and clogged ducts at anytime while you are nursing.

    I am fighting a nasty clogged duct right now that I am fearful will end up becoming mastis.  It is strange, this exact same thing happend to me last time at the same time. Sad  Unfortunately for me, last time it didn't go away until I weaned two months later. 

    Last night, I sat in the shower as hot as I could handle and pumped until I ached.  Today, I am feeling some relief.

    It definitely sounds like mastitis.  As pp said, you can get it at any point while BF:o(  Honestly, I would call your OB afterhours and describe your symptoms.  The faster you get antibiotics (maybe they can call in a script tonight or early tomorrow morning) the faster you will feel better--and mastitis can get ugly very quickly!

    I hope it's not an infection, but better safe than sorry.  GL!

    mastitis! Get on antibiotics ASAP b/c it can be pretty miserable.

    thanks ladies...i just called the doc...they are going to see me first thing in the morning....i hope this is all it is and they can get me on something.... off to bed =)
