TTC After a Loss

Missed m/c?

I don't really understand what a missed miscarriage is. Aren't all m/c "missed"?  I thought it takes the body some time to register that it is no longer pregnant.  It's not like you have symptoms the day growth stops...or do some people?  My symptoms appeared at 8 weeks, but the ultrasound confirmed growth stopped at 6 weeks.   If I had gone to the Dr. at 6 weeks (prior to symptoms), it would have been detected then.  So it's just "missed" because 2 more weeks went by before I knew?

Re: Missed m/c?

  • I think it is missed when the m/c is discovered by ultrasound, rather than having it happen on its own before there is a diagnosis than anything is wrong. My first m/c was natural - the bleeding started before there was any other sign of problem and in fact we saw a heartbeat after the bleeding had begun, but the m/c happened anyway. (So the m/c started before growth stopped.) My second m/c was discovered on ul/s at 8w, with growth stopped at 6w.

I hope that helps make sense of things.

  • There are several different types / classifications of miscarriage.

Missed miscarriage means there is no cramping, no bleeding, cervix is closed.  There are no symptoms of it and the pt doesn't know the pregnancy is no longer viable.

A complete miscarriage is spontaneous passage of tissue and upon exam the cervix is closed and the uterus is empty.

An incomplete miscarriage (a very common reason for a trip to the ER) means the cervix is still dilated, there has been some bleeding/cramping and there is still tissue left in the uterus.

A threatened miscarriage is when there is bleeding but the cervix is closed and there are heart tones.

An inevitable miscarriage is no bleeding yet but the cervix is dilated.

A septic miscarriage is when a miscarriage is ongoing or already happened and the uterus gets an infection.

    HTH.

  • I had a missed m/c...I thought I was 12 weeks along, but ultrasound showed the baby stopped growing at 8 weeks, plus there was no hb.  I had no symptoms at ALL.  The only thing I can think of though is my m/s stopped.  It started around week 5 and it just went away two-three weeks later.  I started to worry, but people would tell me that it comes and goes.

I think my body started to recognze the loss the day of the ultrasound b/c that night I saw pink spotting before I went to bed.
