Can you shower after your water breaks?

I know you aren't supposed to take a bath because of a risk of infection but I don't know about showering. I was just sitting here thinking that if I my water was to break right now (even though I have no reason to believe it would...just the "I'm getting close" scenarios running through my head), I would want to shower before going to the hospital as I haven't taken one yet today.

  • Yes, unless you tested positive for GBS.  If so, you are supposed to go to the hospital ASAP.

Thanks...I plan to ask when we go to class next week but I wanted to ask while I was thinking about it now in case I forget at class.

  • My friend's water broke and she didn't realize it and went to work.  When she finally got to the hospital they told her that they were glad she did NOT shower after it broke because it could have introduced bacteria into her vagina/ute.  I would call and ask a nurse....

She must have been GBS+ and/or the hospital is just super cautious about everything - there really is no reason you can't shower after your water breaks.

  • Yup!   Each l&d room at our hospital has a jacuzzi tub in it and a shower with a bench and a handheld sprayer.  They told us after your water breaks you can't soak in the tub any more, but you can still use the shower.
  • I am GBS+ and my OB has no issue with my soaking in the jacuzzi tub after my water breaks. Since you are receiving antibiotics, there is no reason to avoid water. Plus, it is a myth that still bath water even enters the vagina.

If you have ever seen a water birth (even on TV), it's apparent that there is no problem laboring/delivering in a tub after your water breaks.

I'll be laboring in a tub at a birth center. I'm not worried about it. And I certainly wouldn't be concerned about showering since you're not even submerged in water.
