Bring breast pump to hospital?

Maybe this is a totally foolish question, so flame away if it is, but do you/should you bring your breast pump to the hospital when you have your L/O?

I know that we'll work with the lactation team on bf, but would it be logical to bring my pump too?

Re: Bring breast pump to hospital?

  • I don't know if I will use it, but I plan to bring it.  I'd rather have it there if needed (hospital is 45 min away) if for some odd reason I needed to pump...or at the very least it will be nice to have it there for them to show me how to use it properly/most efficiently!

  • Nope. The hospital usually has pumps you can use if it comes to that.
  • This really is a good question. I didn't think of it and now I'm wondering.  Mine is still in its box with the seal across it so once it's open, there's no returning it.

  • I've heard a lot of recommendations that you should bring it to have the LC show you how to use it and that sometimes they will give you spare parts for it as well.??

  • Most LCs recommend waiting at least a few weeks before you start pumping, in order to get your supply established.  Also, you probably will want to avoid giving bottles/pacis at first so you don't have nipple confusion.  So, no, I won't bring mine.

  • I wouldn't bring it. I've never known anyone to need a breastpump unless their little one was premature and/or in NICU and couldn't be breastfed at the breast. And if that were to occur (heaven forbid!!!) the hospital could provide you with one until your husband could run home to bring you yours.

You already have to lug a lot there and back. I'd leave the pump at home. You won't even be able to get much out and breast milk doesn't come in until day 2-3 post delivery.

  • i won't bring mine. I know they have to have a few spares lying around if you really need to pump there.
  • I doubt you'll need it, although it's not like it can hurt to bring it just in case.  My childbirth teacher said no, don't bring it, because it can interfere with natural BF.  She said wait until you are all settled in BF to use a pump (a few weeks at least).
  • I took the breastfeeding course my hospital offered and this question came up. The LC said it was a good idea to bring it. She said you most likely would not be using it but that they can show you how to use it when the time comes. She said " Better to be shown how to use it when you don't need to, than to have a crying, hungry baby complicating things when you are trying to figure it out." Made sense to me.
  • I'm bringing it solely for educational purposes. The LCs there will show you how to use it.

  • I just asked that question at the hospital on Wens for some issues Ive been having.  The nurse told me that they do not recommend pumping for at least 2 weeks because it will affect your milk supply.  If something happens and you do need one most hospitals have one so that you can use it for an emergency.  There is already so much to worry about we decided not to have 1 more thing to carry.
  • Leave it at home.  I took mine with me and it was a total waste.  Your milk won't be in while you're in the hospital, and you won't want to pump for the first few weeks (let your milk regulate).
  • Don't bring it- the hospital will have pumps if you need one and theirs are MUCH better than anything you have.  My hospital offers a service at 38 weeks where you can bring in your pump and get any instruction you need and also be measured for a nursing bra (and they sell all the pump accessories and nursing apparel there too).

  • I packed mine, Idk if i will use it, i plan to BF while in the hospital and then pump from there on after.
