Babies: 9 - 12 Months

???'s RE: Weaning DC from bottle

My DC is 14 months old.  I started weaning him from the bottle on Friday.  I only gave him his AM bottle and night time bottle and gave him a sippy cup in between.  He seemed to do pretty good.  My only concern is that he doesn't seem to be drinking as much.  I tried giving him milk in his sipppy cup and he drinks a little and then starts to spit it out.  Is it too early to give up the bottle?  I feel like a mean mom, but then again he seems to be doing ok.

  • I only give DS a morning and night bottle. In between, he gets water in a sippy. He gets a total of 18 ounces of formula a day plus the water...

Is your DC drinking whole milk or formula? At 14 months, he/she should be probably be drinking milk (unless there is a health issue) If he is spitting out milk, he may be getting too much to drink. Can you put milk in the sippy for his am and nighttime bottle? Does he drink water out of a sippy?

  • He'll drink water and diluted apple juice from his sippy cup.  He'll drink a little milk and then he'll start to spit it out.  I just want to make sure he's getting enough milk to drink.  I give him an 7 oz bottle in the AM and 8 oz at night.  He sees his Pediatrcian the end of this month for his 15 month physical.  Maybe I should have just waited to ask her then.
  • Maybe you can try a straw cup for his milk? Because it sounds like he does not want his milk in his sippy cup.... DS now gets a morning bottle, and straw cups throughout the day. His intake decreased, and I had to offer, offer, offer. It stressed me out enough that even DH and I had arguments about the constant offering.

We switched to straw cups because DS was not drinking enough in his bottles anymore, and seemed to prefer the straw cup.
