Hi All -
My wife and I are new to New York and we were hoping that folks here could help us out around maternity leave. I understand that FMLA allows you to take 12 weeks of unpaid time off, but that would be very hard for us to swallow.
How is everyone dealing with this? I read somewhere that people use Short Term Disability to help cover their wages... .can anyone tell me what they did, or what we should do? Are there any good web sites to go to?
Thanks!
Re: Maternity Leave
You can use short term disability for 6 weeks if you delivered vaginally and 8 weeks if you delivered via c-section. It's not a lot of money though, but it's something. However, a lot of employers allow you to use your accumulated sick or vacation hours to cover you while you're on maternity leave. I used my sick/vacation hours, so some of my maternity leave I was paid my full salary. However I ran out partway through, so I was eligible to file short term disability for a couple weeks. I'd speak to your HR rep to see what all your options are. GL!
