Need ideas: perfect 1-yr old b-day present!

One of my dear friends is having a party for her 1-year old son next Saturday.  He is a miracle child conceived after severe endo, countless laps and her being told she'd never have children.  So, I obviously want to do something special for him.

I was hoping to not spend more than $40-50 max.  I figured with all the 1-year old birthdays lately it would be fresh on many minds!

You've got WAY more in your budget than you'll need (most kid stuff around this age group caps at $20). I asked this question a few weeks ago, and here's what I was recommended

* Ride on toys (tricycle, fire engine)
* Pull toys, anything with a string that can be pulled once baby
starts walking
* Bath toys
* Wheeled toys (trucks, trains, stroller yes even for a boy!)
* Simple puzzles (wooden ones from Melissa & Doug)
* Shape sorting toys
* "Cars" ride-on walker
* Flap books
* Stuffed animals
* Little chair (Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel or P'kolino)
* Ball popper
* Busy Gears
* Band in a Box by Melissa and Doug
* Egg shakers
* Shopping cart
* Blocks
* Stacking toys
* Melissa and Doug alphabet blocks
* Toys from Iplay (aka International Playthings)
* Toys from VTech

PS, yes my response above was very toy focused. I also think books are a great birthday gift (as are clothes.... for like 18+ and up since most people buy for the immediate age group and you have gaps in the middle).

Also, whatever you purchase add a balloon to it.  My DS's favorite things EVER are the balloons from his 1st birthday party.  Of course, the parents might not be too excited because it is possible their LO will become obsessed with balloons like mine did.  Seriously balloons are the fav of almost all 1-yr olds that I know.

Nolan LOVES any ride on/push toys. He was a late walker though. Now his Fav. thing is a Big Lego set from my brother. Not duplo, but not the tiny legos. just the bigger legos!
