Painting a rocker/glider?

Has anyone ever painted a rocker/glider?  I found a nice dutalier on Craigslist for a really good price, but it is a oak color wood.  We are planning on a black crib and black furniture for our nursery.  Do you think this would work or would it be a huge pain because of all the mechanisms involved?  Should I just leave it wood color and have a bit of a mismatch look?  Thanks!

Re: Painting a rocker/glider?

  • HEY!  I just did this.  Our furniture is cherry and the glider my MIL found (surprisingly beautiful) was white.  The colors in the nursery are green and pink.  We only painted one wall, an accent wall, green.  there is alot of pink in other places so we decided to paint the glider and ottoman green and we my mom is recovering the cushio in a pink chenille fabric.  It turned out great.  Hope this helps.  I felt the same way I wanted everything to match.  Good luck!

  • Did you just use a basic furniture paint?  Primer first?  Thanks!

  • I think you can use a spray primer and then a spray paint with a coat of polyurethane and it should be fine.
  • I just refinished a glider myself, it was a cherry wood, and I wanted it white.  I sanded the entire thing to ensure the primer would stik good, primed it then painted it, last I brought it outside and spray painted the parts that I had a hard time getting too.  Behind the spindles and all.

It turned out great, and I am very happy with it.  It did take some time though.
