Wal Mart sells them in the craft section. They are white, wooden, and come with pre-drilled holes on the top of the letter. I would say the letters are 8ish inches tall. They would probably need to be painted as it seems like they just have a basic coat on them. They run around $2.99 each. (Which I thought was great since BRU's are $8 a piece.)
If your DH or you are crafty you could get 3/4 inch mdf and print out the letters in a font and size you like and cut them out with a jig say or a bandsaw which ever you might have. I've also seen banners made of felt or other materials that have letters embroidered or appliqued on them.
