High-Risk Pregnancy

New to bed rest- questions

My doctor has put me on bed rest for the remaninder of my pregnancy to try and treat the swelling I've had in my feet and legs.  I asked him if modified was ok, meaning that I could be sitting up but off my feet.  He said no, because I was still cutting off the circulation where my legs bend at the hips.  So, I am horizontal for 23-and-a-half hours of the day!

My problem is this:  it's only been two days and I am so sore I can hardly move.  I feel like I've had the flu!  Am I going to feel this way until my bed rest is over or is this kind of the early stage?  I'm pretty miserable right now, so any hope that you can give me will be helpful!

Re: New to bed rest- questions

  • Hi -?

The reason I was put on bed rest is not the same as yours - and I'm sorry to hear that you've now had to wait out the rest of your pregnancy in bed. ?I have also been on strict bed rest - no sitting, no standing but only for bathroom breaks and doc appts. ?I was on BR for over 13 weeks. ?Just think that you have only a couple weeks of this... ?:)

I had a lot of lower back, tail bone pain (still do) and would swell up when I stand. ?Laying down on my left will usually help to relieve the back pain. ?Laying on my back with several pillows stacked under my legs and feet really helped to relive the swelling and the back pain, too. ?Baths a couple times a day has helped also. ?The pain in your muscles is something that I have felt too - mostly due to all the inactivity while laying in bed - I do stretches while laying down to help with blood flow.

Hope this helps. ?Good luck - remember that it wont be too long and you'll have your little one.

  • It seems to get better after  a while.  Some days my back and hips really hurt and some days I am very comfortable.  Try switching positions frequently.  I have been on bedrest for 6 weeks.
  • I'm sure it varies from person to person, but I've been on bedrest for 19 weeks now and I am super sore and now just plain uncomfortable. I know that when I deliver in 5 weeks the plan is to start physical therapy to help me regain muscle tone and my stamina. My entire body aches at this point, but the fact that I've been able to make it to this point after having two losses at 22 weeks makes it worth it.

    Hang in there!
