With my last pregnancy, I tested at 9 dpo (stupid, I know) and got a BFN. Then at 12 dpo when I had a temp spike, tested again and got a BFP. I usually base my testing on what my chart looks like. But this month, I think I'm not going to temp during the 2ww, so I'll test at 12 or 13 dpo. IMO, I think if you're KU, you'll get a BFP with a good test.
I try not to test until 12 DPO (though this month I was naughty and tested at 10 DPO). I wish I could make myself hold out until AF is late, but now I have a 16 day LP (that's been my little post m/c "gift" - it was 13 - 14 days), and I just can't wait until 18 DPO - it's too long, and I'm too good at making myself believe in all my phantom symptoms!
I start peeing at 10dpo. I have a ton of internet cheapies, so why not? But for my first pregnancy I got a very dark bfp at about 14dpo. DH said I could only have one test (for the cheap one they're ten bucks each!), and to use it wisely... Otherwise I would have tested much sooner.

I always wait until AF is 2 or 3 days late. Last time I POAS two days after she didn't show, and got a negative. I didn't get my positive until a couple of days after that. I figure why waste the little buggers.
I've been known to test on 10dpo, but I'm firmly holding out until at least 12dpo (if not longer) from now on. I'm wasting too much money on pee sticks.

Good luck!

Short answer: I don't think 12 DPO is too early.
