wwyd? vacation, ferber, waking REALLY early?

so, i posted a day or two ago about ds going to sleep awesome, staying asleep all night, but suddenly starting to wake at 4 every morning.  i got a whole range of suggestions...tried nursing and putting back in crib (no way) tried a later bedtime (nope, woke at 3:59).  and tried ferber intervals (up from 3:59 until i gave up at 5:20 because i didn't know if i should just get him up for the day).  also, we are on vacation at my folks house until next weekend.  ugh.  i have no idea how to get him to sleep otherwise, because he has been doing such a great job at home (except the early waking thing).  it did only take him about 8 min last night with one check to fall asleep and he slept until 4 again.

so, wwyd? try to ferber in the mornings and just hang in there, or suck it up for the week and just try something when you got home, or ferber for a while, but get him up at 5 or 6 for the day?  i guess i'm confused because i know that the book says just to get them up for the day if they wake at 5 or 6 because it is unlikely they will go back to sleep.  i didn't know what to do if they woke before that but were still up then.

plus, dh isn't coming until sunday night, so i have to do this myself which sucks.  any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.  i just feel like i have no idea..

  • I would do whatever you can to get him to sleep while you're on vacation and then ferber when you get home. He's probably just out of whack because you're on vacation. GL!

  • Vacation has really thrown off my DS's sleep too. Hopefully it works itself out when you get home.

Until then - is it by any chance getting light in the room at about 4 o'clock? You may want to try hanging up a sheet or something to help block out the sunrise, if that's bothering him. GL!

  • That's exactly what happened to us on vacation last month- it SUCKED. ?We were at my family's lake house, which is small, so I couldn't let him cry or the whole house was up at 4am. ?He wouldn't go back down for anything so I was usually up with him at that time. ?:(

Ditto the pp- is it brighter in the room than it is at home? ?We thought that was the problem originally, so we hung dark beach towels over the windows. ?It helped him nap but no help with the mornings.?

  • DD is a great sleeper at home, but on vacation she got progressively worse each night. and I was staying at a vacation house w/my whole family and couldn't let her cio b/c it would wake up the whole house. I felt like I had a newborn again. I finally ended up nursing her everytime she woke up b/c it was the only thing that would put her back to sleep. I was nursing her about 2-3 times a night. When we got back home, she went right back to her old self.
