i'm freaking out a bit about honey

i was at my in home daycare this am and stayed a while. i was watching her and gave her some cherrios from this big bin. she loved them so i tasted one and it was honey nut cheerios.  i thought they were the plain ones. they have never given her those and didnt see me do it.

ugh. should i worry? i am googling but finding mixed reviews.

  • how do you know if its pasteruized? i assume in cereal it is. Just so you all don't think I'm a total idiot- they are called honey nut scooters and don't have that coating that honey nut cheerios does or I would have noticed.

  • yup - you're fine. just don't do "raw" honey.
  • omg calm down.  the issue with honey is the botulinum toxin produced by botulism bacteria.  any food with honey that is cooked, baked, or heated to high temps in any way/shape/form will not harm your DC.  and i am a microbiologist, so it's not like i'm ignorant about these things.  i cannot even count the number of times DS has had handfuls of honey nut cheerios.  it will be ok.  just don't give spoonfulls of honey straight from the beehive, kwim??

  • thanks. im not usually a freaked out mom but i read botulism and panicked!
  • They are fine.  Trust me.
