Grunting 1 month old

My LO will turn 1 month old tomorrow. For the past few days it seems like he is grunting and straining a lot. He is EBF and his stools are soft and runny - also sometimes watery. Do any of your LO's grunt and strain a lot? He seems like he is constipated but he has about 4-5 dirty diapers a day and they seem soft. I am at my wits end because he looks like he is in so much pain when he grunts...his face turns red.

Thanks!

  • LOL, he's not constipated.  And I quote from a Baby 411-"it's called grunting baby syndrome. You try pooping while laying down and see how easy it is." I had to reread that line and I will never forget it either!

  • My DS has been grunting since birth and he is not constipated that is for sure.  He grunts in his sleep especially.  I love it when he does it in public and someone says, "Oh he must be working on something", no he is not; he is just a grunter, LOL!
  • Yep, we have a grunter too. I call him Grunt-hatch when he's "doing work". It's loud too, no one believes us about how loud it is when he poops. You wouldn't think it would be so hard to push out watery poo!

  • My LO did this until abot 1 1/2- 2 months old.  She'd start at like 4 am snd then also t/o the day.  I wa worried but she totally grew out of it.  It has to do with their immature GI system.
