My brother is a recent law school grad and just got his first job offer from a HUGE firm. The starting salary is $40K. OMG. I feel bad for my bro b/c he pretty much has to take due to his massive student loan debt.
Has he passed the bar? That is a very typical starting salary for a newbie. Once he passes the bar, and starts REALLY practicing, it will increase quite nicely.
Sadly, this is about right. However, he'll be getting some good bonus opportunities at a big firm, and a chance to move up by year. Salary + bonus, though will be decent for him. It's all about location, too.

Yes...he did pass. The lawyer who interviewed him told him that he starts out so low b/c "he can...due to the job market." Isnt that awful?

We are in the Chicago burbs. This practice is in the city.
Me too! My dad is a lawyer in the city, too! That starting salary for here isn't bad, actually. What kind of law will he practice? My dad is a personal injury lawyer.
So being a lawyer should automatically equal huge salary?? I'm sure there are lots of people who would love to have had a 40K starting salary??
You are correct in that many people would be thrilled to have this as a starting salary but probably not if they were over $100K in student loan debt.
It's really not an uncommon situation. I know plenty of people who have or will have that much loan debt (I'll be pushing that number myself when I'm finished) and get about that as a starting salary. Sucks, but that's pretty typical.

Small world:) He will be doing Bankruptcy law if he decides to take it. What burbs do you live in? We are in the west.

We live in the NW burbs- Elk Grove, but the Schaumburg side.
Also a teacher and San Diego Unified starts at 39K, which is low for the county, but probably higher than a lot of the country. Still not nearly getting paid what we are worth!
Man I should have been a teacher somewhere else... Starting salary is 29K. I belive it tops out around 47K if you have your masters by the time you retire. Sheesh... Oh and private school pay is worse, much worse.
starting salaries at HUGE firms in chicago have been around $145K for the last year or so, so something sounds strange about this. however, most big firms are deferring their 2009 class until jan. 2010 or later, so i guess he is lucky to be working.

No, that's not awful. That is reality. He should count his lucky stars that he got hired at all in this job market.
Its the same for medical residency, and they also take out some crazy loans!!
yup. my friend just got her pharmD and is doing a residency. she told me she can't wait to make money that's "worth it." doing the residency, she's already making a fair amount more than i'm making at my permanent job, and i got my BA in '07...
LOL, does he do insurance defense or bankruptcy? That's pretty low for a lawyer. Here in Chicago, the big firms start you out at $160k. But that's for the big firms. I was offered jobs when I graduated 6 years ago around 40k. I didn't take any of them needless to say. How did they expect me to pay off my student loans for that??? If he waits, he can do better. Why doesn't he just do contract work until he finds something he wants? I did contract work for Robert Half legal. It paid better (I made about $45 an hour) and then eventually I found something permanent that I liked and paid decently. Like others said, it also depends where you went to law school. I was fortunate in that I went to a top tier school. However, it still was not easy for me to find something decent because my grades weren't stellar.
wow! Starting salary for a teacher is $47K!!! Luckily his salary will increase very quickly.
Really? After 7 years and 4/5 of a masters degree, I still make less than that.
I started at $29K.
I was going to say.....Um yeah most teacher in this area don't make near that. DH says starting is around 19K here. DH started at around 50K as a Trooper.

Maybe I should have asked where. This is definitely not what I was paid as a beginning teacher.
Me neither!!!!! It was just passed here in San Antonio. I think it's wonderful! (I don't teach any more though.) It's especially wonderful bc our COL is so low.

More like 30K, but still too low!!! My friend just recently told me that she's looking for a teaching job in Texas, and could get spanish specialist position (without a cert.) and start at 43. I hate that, especially knowing that she'll make that much without going through the schooling (she does have a lingistics degree) for teaching. Sigh....oh well....:)
It is a shame. The market is so over saturated with them right now. My sister had to start out about the same she works 60 plus hours a week to try and make more.

That is why unless you go BIGLAW it's not financially sound to go to law school.
yep.
If you dont' graduate from a 1st tier school or top 5% of your class, you don't make much money starting out.
My first job out of law school was for $46K. And I have $120K in student loan debt. niiiiiice.
Really? After 7 years and 4/5 of a masters degree, I still make less than that.

Wow-not here! I make just over that and I have been teaching for 8 years and have a master's degree!
here there really is not much bonus for a masters - maybe a 1-2k more a year. our area starts at 42 or 43k.

He is in the wrong city...though lawyers here can't get jobs...
He is making what a receptionist here makes.
