s/o of the BF in front of post ... does your FIL leave the room?

Just wondering how common this is.  My FIL lives in the UK and is pretty old school.  He visited when DS was about 2 months old and everytime I would BF (with a cover) he would excuse himself so that I could we could have our privacy.  This would be fine if I only BF every 3-4 hrs, but I nursed on demand and DS was always on the boob.  It got to be a little ridiculous and he eventually stayed in the room but looked away.  Anyone else's FIL like this?

  • Nope, never given him the chance to be. I always go to another room & shut the door. it depends on how comfortable I am with you as to if I'll nurse around you.

  • When we were in the hospital and I was still trying to get the hang of it, everyone would leave the room.

Now, I just use a cover and it's not that big of a deal. But, that's in my own home and not out in public. (I think my FIL is used to it. He already has two other grandkids and my SIL also bf.)

  • I can kind of understand that. It may have been just as much him wanting you to feel comfortable rather than the other way around.

That said, my FIL tend to drive me up a wall and was all about giving me a hard time about where I'd 'store all those cans of Similac' and telling me that my 'life is now over' because we have a LO. I can't imagine being anywhere near him while BFing, so I imagine I'd leave. ?

  • I don't use a cover, and he doesn't leave the room. I'm pretty sure I flashed him a few times in the begining. Oh well, I was learning. Now, I almost have to always go to a quiet room. Ds gets too distracted.

My step dad would always leave the room. But either way, I don't care.

  • Mine is from and lives in Mexico, so he's never had the chance, but I think he'd probably stay in the room.  In his town it's normal to see women breastfeeding in public, at parties, etc. w/o even covering up.
