Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Honey in baked goods?

Can an 11 month old eat bread that contains honey as an ingredient? I googled and am finding mixed messages. I also asked the pediatrician at his 9 month appt when I learned that the waffles he had been eating contained honey as an ingredient and he didn't really give me an answer.

I made the bread homemade today and would love to give DS some! Oh, he has graham crackers often and they contain honey as well. What to do?

Re: Honey in baked goods?

  • No, botulism spores are very heat resistant.

  • I've always heard it is raw honey that should be avoided.  Most of the honey in baked goods is heated to a point that it should be fine.  Plus it is in such tiny amounts that it isn't going to do any harm.

But that's just my opinion.  I'm sure doctors would tell you to stay away from it all.

  • I've always heard that as long as it's cooked, honey is fine.  Besides, your son is almost one anyway, and will be be able to eat raw honey at that point.
  • Wench, I am now craving baklava.
  • Lets just say...I learned first hand the hard way and was in the hospital...from baked goods at work, along with 33 of my coworkers.

Were they baked with raw honey?

I wonder what temperature the honey needs to reach in order to be considered pasteurized.

It was baked on site at my office. Not sure what they used!

  • my pedi specifically said last week at our 9 month appt that it is ok to bake/cook w/ honey and give to DD that when heated the bacteria in honey that is bad is killed.
