excessive kicking ??

Okay, does anyone else's LO do this?

Ds is asleep, either when we put him down or in the middle of the night and we can hear (and have seen) him put both legs in the air and throw his feet down on the mattress.  Is this some sort of self soothing technique, like head rocking/banging?  I'm going to mention it at the pedi's office, but I'm not terribly concerned about it-just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or might know a reason?

Re: excessive kicking ??

  • Ugh, DS does the same thing, I asked my Pedi if there is such a thing as Baby Restless Leg Syndrome!  Sometimes it is so frustrating because you know they are almost asleep and those freakin legs get going!!

  • LOL yes Nathan does the same thing!
  • DD does this in the middle of the night too. Everynight I put her clear on one end of the crib and the next morning she has scooted clear to the other side.

  • DD does this.

Infants have two types of sleep.  Active and Deep.

During active sleep, a baby will kick their arms and legs, groan or squeak in their sleep.  And obviously during deep sleep they move a lot less and are quiet.  It's very normal.

  • DS does the same thing.

  • DS has been doing this for a few weeks.  Luckily he doesn't wake himself up.  He tends to do it more when falling asleep so I contribute it to soothing...although I can't figure out how it's soothing.

  • Your LO is not the only one. My DS moves his legs like that in his sleep a lot.  He does wake himself sometimes but he usually goes back to sleep.
