  • Because most times one income isn't enough therefore qualifying for financial aid

  • IDK where you live but every single person I know with kids gets school for just about free, super depressing to me lol.  My school wont give me a grant because they say "we make too much", we are drowning in debt right now but they dont see that they just see we are married and my husband does ok.  The confession pretty much came from the fact that I am supposed to start school in fall and IDK if I can now because of money...sucks

  • Yup, same here. According to the state I am a "single" mom because SO & I arent married. I am paying for all my school.

ugh! that super sucks! i wish i could go for free too! my student loans are already killing me and i still havent even finished my associates yet!

    Good luck!

  • Are you going to grad school?

I could have gotten my undergrad for free if I had my DD before going to college.  Now that I want to go to grad school, nada.  The only things I can find for assistance for single mothers are for undergrad.

In high school a girl I know met with a financial aid officer at the college she wanted to attend in the fall and she said to her "If you just had a baby your school would be paid for or almost free".   jaw.on.floor.

  • Are you going to an accredited school that uses Federal and State Aid?  You should qualify for Stafford Loans - subsidized.  You should also be getting state grants with that many children.  I know the rules for Ohio, but I would think most other states aren't that different.

    Did you complete a FAFSA?

Yep. A girl I went to school with had a C average and had a baby in 12th grade. She got her bachelor's completely free.

I had an A average and the only scholarship I got was to a Communinty college, so I only got an Associates degree. I wanted to go for my Bachelor's, but couldn't afford it. It sucks.

    AHA.  That's probably the difference.

You may want to look into the difference between tuition with the aid at a university vs. the cc tuition without it.  You might be surprised!

  • AW, i will look into it!

and to you other ladies that worked your ass off for great grades and got screwed in the college dept....it SO SUCKS! Im so sorry!

  • I got screwed too. I was single last year (DH and I weren't married) and had just had my son and I got nothing--no Pell Grants. Just Stafford Loans and a Departmental Scholarship, which helps, but not enough. Its because I am going to grad school and b/c I'm older. Its paid for now, luckily, because I am teaching for them full time this year.
