S/O the shoeless baby in burger king...

A local radio show asked this question which I am going to ask here: what sort of stranger criticism have you received about your LO? Criticism about using a pacifier, carrying them in a moby, not wearing enough clothes?

Re: S/O the shoeless baby in burger king...

  • My grandma & mom always try to add another layer of clothes to my dd,like a sweater, even if it's 90 degrees. I always tell them to back off(in a nice way)

eta: opps, I re-read your question. I haven't had any criticism from strangers yet.

  • an older lady told me "She's a baby, not a baby doll to play with" b/c I had her in a onesie and no pants in the blazing heat... if it was up to her she'd put a blanket and socks on her too. hmmph.

  • Nothing in public yet, but we get from family all the time that we let DS run around naked.

First off he does not run, he cant even sit up. He is usually in a diaper and nothing else during the day at home because he is such a warm baby. When we put clothes on him his body temp shoots up. Its annoying when family ask why we always have him in a diaper at home and not clothes because they know how warm he gets.?

  • Hmmm, none to date....for either....
  • My MIL said 'oh, he's a big baby, isn't he?'  Um, yes.  He was 8 lbs 12 oz when born for pete's sake.  And he's 12 lbs 5 oz. at 2.5 months.  He's not a porker.

And I saw pictures of my DH when he was born.  He looked like the michelin man!  :)

  • That I hold her too much - since I have a Moby I'm constantly told that I'm going to spoil her .. not so much by strangers, they think its the neatest thing they've seen but by family. AKA IL's.

Oh, and that I dont BF - I get that -- all.the.time. Even when I EP'd it drove me nuts bc it was MORE work than BFing and I did it so she would get the milk -- I vow to never ask a mother if they are BFing.. EVER.

  • No stranger criticism yet, although I'd probably react strongly if I heard any because I find those sort of people who offer unsolicited advice to be obnoxious in many contexts, not just with my baby :)

  • I was told I didn't feed him enough.  He was 7.11 at birth and weighs 12 pounds now! I think he's plenty fed enough.

But then again, I think people are just clueless about how big babies are.  Because I get told how big he is and I get told how small he is.

  • Not quite a stranger but it came from a friend of a friend.

She told me how she told Angelina (my friend) that I REALLY should be BFing in a snarky tone.  She said she would NEVER feed her kids formula.  Same day she said "sorry but your baby has a flat nose".  WTF??  She has made other comments but I can't remember them right now.  And she has a 4 year old that threatened to cut my friend's eyes out??

  • I also had plenty of people get on me when I had her at the store the day after we came home from the hospital.  I replied by saying "would you like to do my shopping for me then?"  My husband is deployed so it's not like I can send him out or have him watch the kids.  Everyone that made that comment should understand since it was all on post and they know it is in the middle of a deployment.
  • My favorite was when I was 8 months pregnant in Costco with my 2 year old DD.  She refused to get into the cart, and I didn't want to deal with the meltdown and needed to get grocery shopping done.  She is typically pretty good at staying by me and "helping" me push the cart so off we went. All of a sudden she took off running down the aisle, didn't stop when I asked her to, and was nearing the end of the aisle with plans to turn the corner, so I abandoned my cart and literally ran/waddled after her.  When I got back to my cart there was an elderly lady waiting for me to inform me that DD should really be in the cart.  As if I hadn't thought of putting her in the cart and enjoyed chasing a 2 year old while 8 months pregnant through Costco.  I just laughed and walked off without saying anything.
