PPD and BF

anyone out there take any PPD meds and are still able to BF? im not doing to well and am considering calling my doc for some help. I have a long history with manic depression, so its pretty much a given with me...i just feel like i should wait a little longer to see if it gets better before getting back on those nasty meds...thoughts?

Re: PPD and BF

  • I wouldn't wait...the first 5 months of my son's life were horrible for me...I'd hate that to happen to you too.

  • I did both times.  I wouldn't say I necessarily experienced PPD after having #2 though.  I had it bad after #1 was born.  Both times I nursed and took an antidepressant.  I just weaned #2 way sooner than I did with #1 because, for me, bf'ing and depression go hand in hand.

  • Zoloft can be taken if you are breastfeeding. I know what you mean about having to take the nasty meds, but I am feeling a little better since I started taking them two weeks ago.
  • My anti-depressants were upped.  I'm on 60mg fluoxetine (prozac).  I also started to get anxiety attacks 4 days pp and was prescribed .25mg lorazepam to take when the symptoms come on.  It is a life saver.  I know a little bit of everything you take goes into the breast milk, but I have to take these to stay normal and functioning.  GL

edit- I meant to say don't wait, get help now.

  • I wouldn't wait either...

I took Zoloft for the first 4 months of my son's life and I ebf.
