Something totally different!!! What is your favorite book EVER and WHY????

Mine would probably be Sahara by Clive Cussler. I think I first read it when I was 13??? I was always a reader and was reading "adult" books by 5th grade, so when my mom passed this one onto me, I latched on. To this day, I have the complete Cussler collection... and it's taking up a lot of space!!!

I love it because Cussler is really is a master storyteller. He's got this cast of characters that are so developed and relatable, but there is still so much complexity and imagination to them. Plus, the story that Cussler weaves is just amazing... you just never know where Dirk Pitt is going to end up. It's one of those stories that you can just get lost in.

Ordinary People by Judith Guest.  It would be hard for me to put into words why I like it so much, but it's always been one of my faves.

That's hard because I've love so many books.  If I had to pick one, it's probably either Gone with the Wind or Pride & Prejudice.

Fuzzy8252--I am a life-long Custer fan too.  I had read a couple of his books, and then "met" him when I ran into one of his cars with my bicycle.  He lived a few houses down from my grandparents back then, and was really nice (yet scary looking to a kid).

We have the Cussler Museum locally here with all of the cars from his books.  I'm not a huge car buff, but it's really a cool collection since they're definitely not your "usual" collector's cars.

To Kill a Mockingbird I love the innocence of the children, and how they grow in the book.  It's written very well and I love how it discusses racism, drug addiction and dead beat dads.  Scout is my favorite character in the book and the inspiration for my dogs name!!  Thankfully, my dog isn't too much like the book character...

By far my favorite is a memoir by A. Mannette Ansay "Limbo"  I read this before I knew she was featured on Oprah's book club. She was featured for her book titled "Vinegar Hill"  I haven't read that one yet but I have read "Blue Water" - unbelieveable description of emotion and complexity. Love her!!

My ALL TIME favorite book is a children's book... "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein. I can't wait to read it to my baby!

It would be so great to meet Cussler. I was never a huge adventure fan until I started reading his books. And I would LOVE to see the car collection... I'm a bit of a car buff and I think that it could be one reason I love reading about all these different cars and other "means" of transportation. Oh... if only I could be one of Dirk Pitt's women!!!

I was just thinking of The Giving Tree the other day when we were at the movies!!! They were showing a preview of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and I started thinking that it was too bad that they really couldn't do a movie adaptation of The Giving Tree!!!

I don't know that I have an all-time favorite but I loved Pillars of the Earth (Ken Follet) when I read it and it hit home so much more when I went to Koln Germany and saw the cathedral there.

Catcher in the Rye.  I carried a copy of it in high school.  Now it is my favorite book to teach.  I even have a red hunting hat I wear in class.   I like being reminded that I'm not the only one who doesn't have it all figured out.  It also  sounds cheesy, but I like seeing how I'm different each time I read/ teach the book.

I love the Harry Potter series - yes I am a huge dork. I also plan on reading everything Dr. Seuss has ever written to my child.

There are some good books posted on here! I love the Harry Potter series!! I think the movies are going downhill, but the books... amazing. Then we've got some Gone With The Wind... (I'm reading a spinoff right now... Rhett Butler's People)... Catcher in the Rye... I still have my copy from high school... it took reading it twice to get into it, but there is something very identifying with Holden. Of course... Pride and Prejudice.... I read Pillars of the Earth... I'm still not sure if i liked it... but it was thought provoking.

Oooh! My dad had this book, and wouldn't let me read it until I was "old enough", so of course that made me want to read it even more, and I think I took it off his bookshelf not long after!  Loved it.

Fave book has to be The Mists of Avalon - I love anything with a touch of history to it!

"Little Men" by Louisa May Alcott

 LOVE her writing style. Love how it shows little boys getting into mischief and being bad but also shows how they grow through their mistakes, endure consequences, and learn self responsibility. I cannot wait to read this book to my children! I hope I can love truly and fully like Jo does.

1984 by George Orwell

Why? Because it was an awesome prediction of what the world could/would be like if socialist took over. And, right now, it seems to be eerily prophetic.  It's just so scary how close to reality that book has become! Orwell is an absolute genius.

 I also LOVE Ray Bradburry, much for the same reasons. And that man had such insight into human nature, it freaked me out a little. If you have not read this one collection of short stories by him, you should. Each story is centered around the images on a "Painted Man." And the stories speak to different aspects of our humanity, both the good and the bad (mostly the bad, though). Awesome writing.

I've been a reader all my life and was raeding adult books by 4th-5th grade as well. I could list a thousand books I appreciate, but I'm already writing too much

I have a hard time picking a "favorite" of most things, but not books.

I read a lot, but my favorite of all time is A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. I've read it over and over again...I'm probably due for a re-read now! I love it because of the characters, but also because everything in it happens for a reason.

Godfather. I literally was engrossed; I love the movies too (well, part 1 and 2, but 3 stunk.. probably because it wasn't based on the book at all), but the book was better. Unfortunately, I didn't like any of Mario Puzo's other books, so I guess he was a one-hit wonder for me.

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry.  I don't know how to even describe it, but there are so many wonderful characters and I could read it over and over again.  I had to read it for summer reading in high school, and I dreaded it because it's a western, which I could normally do without it.  I couldn't put it down once I started it, and I love it every time I reread it.

I've been sitting here looking at my books for a while now... and there really are way too great ones that I love... any C.S. Lewis fans???? I love The Chronicles of Narnia. I think that it's way more than a simple childrens story... The Screwtape Letters, The Great Divorce.... then I came across my old copy of Huck Finn.... my Shakespeare collection.... i really have way too many books.

I loved Catcher when I was in high school- I felt like Salinger had looked into my soul and knew me.  I read it a couple of years ago and my perspective had changed drastically!

Have you read King Dork by Frank Portman?  There's a lot of Catcher fun-poking in there, but it's a good YA read.

My fav book ever is White Oleander by Janet Fitch. Such an awesome book, and the movie is great, too. Cast includes Michelle Pfifer, Renee Zelwegger, and the woman who played "Jenny" from Forrest Gump...

I just watched White Oleander the other day. I read the book a few years ago too, although I actually liked the movie better. I thought Michelle Pififer was great in it, although the real standout was the girl playing Astrid.

Oh my Gosh!  PJOANN!  I can't believe your favorite is also my favorite: Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.  It is an extraordinary book that sweeps you away to a different epoch in history.  It's tragic, romantic, funny, suspenseful all rolled into one.

 My second pick would have to be Kite Runner.  It is simply amazing.  Plus it doesn't end on a "cheery" note but more of a realistic one.

the twilight series. im a pretty avid reader, and those 4 books i littlerly could not put down!! i dont think i picked up a book for a month after finishing those 4 in a month, because nothing seemed as good after reading them.
