Pregnant after 35

Hypnobirth delivery...big FAT FAIL!

Here's the birth story Giselle Eaurouge, 6.6 pounds, 19 inches long.  40w6d.

Friday night at 1030, my water breaks.  We drive to the hospital and its confirmed that my water did indeed break.  Dilation = 0.

I cant go home because the doctors and midwives agree that I lost too much amniotic fluid.  I get admitted and by 3 am, I am started on a small pill inserted into my vagina to start labor.  By 6 am, I am dilated to 2 cm.

We decide to go on Pitocin by 3 pm with no epidural.  By 6 pm I am dilated to 4cm.   By 730 pm, I am dilated to 6cm.  At midnight, I am still 6cm!  And at this point, my hopes of a epi free birth are gone, bc I just cannot handle the pain.  I have went 24 hours induced without any relief.  Hypnobirthing was no longer possible as I was broken down with no encouragement in sight.  At 1 am, I take the epidural and am a new woman.  Still at 6 cm, remember this.

By 6 am, my parents are here, my ILs arrived last night (early enough to see me in pain, early enough to score some DIL brownie points).  By 830 am, I am almost an 8cm.  By Noon, I am 8cm.  For some reason, I am just not dilated.  My water has now been broken for over 36 hours, putting LO at risk for infection.   But because there were NO signs of stress at ALL, I was able to continue with a vaginal birth.

Still at 8cm, the midwies suggest that I turn left to right every hour and up the pitocin to a gradual 30cc/hour.  Now keep in mind, you need permission to go over 20 ccs.  Its noon.  And they increase my pitocin to 30ccs until about 6pm. At that time hopefully, I will be a 9 or even 10cm!!!  Yay, baby is on her way.

 But by 4 pm, I am still 8cm :(

C Section time. After 44 horus of HARD BACK LABOR, with gradual epidural relief, baby Giselle EauRouge was born!  From wanting a totally natural hypnobirth and vaginal delivery experience, I went in the TOTAL opposite direction.

The pain is in the past and is a distant memory.  All I can think about is the new love in my life!

Re: Hypnobirth delivery...big FAT FAIL!

  • WOW - congratulations!  And what a pretty name - I've not heard of Eaurouge before - how unique!

Sorry things did not work out as you had hoped - but thank goodness you and baby Giselle are doing fine!  I want to go natural as well, but I keep telling people that it's really all up to my little girl as to what happens.  Reading everyone's birth experiences reinforces that I need to be prepared for just about anything!

Thanks for sharing - looking forward to photos!  Congrats again, Mama!

  • Congratulations! Party!!!

Sorry that things didn't go as planned but happy to hear you and LO are doing well.

  • Good luck to you!  Eau Rouge is a famous turn on a race track at Spa Francorchamps, Belgium.  DH and I are huge Formula One Racing fans. Its a high speed uphill turn at 190 mph..most of the time, done in the wet rain.

Since we werent having a boy, I had to give DH something!

  • Wow - what a story!  Thank you for sharing it.  It helps to remember that things do not always go as you hope/plan.  So sorry that you had to go through all of that, but so happy for you and your beautiful little "prize".  That is really all that matters in the end right?!  Congrats!
  • Congratulations on your little girls. I'm sorry your delivery didn't go as planned but so glad you ended up with a healthy baby.

I was just reading your blog- I never made the connection between the PNV and that, umm, grassy smell. I thought it was just because I was eating more fiber...lol.

  • First off, congratulations!! And, her name is absolutely gorgeous!!

Wow. 44 hours of labor. You are a strong woman. I'm not sure how I'd deal with that. Glad to hear in the end of all that you have a beautiful, healthy baby girl and the pain is a distant memory, even if it didn't follow the original birth plan.

  • Congrats on your baby girl!   Epis are a gift from the heavens.
  • WOW!  What a story and so glad you're doing ok with the LO in your arms.  I LOVE the name Giselle, but then again i'm kinda partial as it was my GM's name and it's my MN as well.   :o)

Please take care of yourself and send us pics as soon as you can!

  • Congratulations!!! Giselle is a lovely name and while your hypnobirth delivery didn't happen, you're a trooper and your LO is lucky to have such a strong momma.

    Take care of yourself!

  • Congratulations on your new baby girl!!!

I was just looking into hypnobirthing yesterday, yours is the first story I've read where it wasn't all peaches and cream.  That's too bad it didn't work for you at all and you had to experience that pain and lengthy labour.

Can't wait to see pics of the baby, maybe I need to check out your blog?...

  • Wowser! You know what I love? That you had a plan and although you weren't able to adhere to it, you still have an amazing attitude! Great job going through all of those hours of labor. I know she's worth it! Beautiful name, too!
  • WOW!  You are so strong an have an amazing additude even though things didn't go the way you planned.  Congrats on your baby girl!!  I can't wait to see pictures.

  • Congrats!!

Good for you for recognizing the best birth plan has the outcome of a healthy mom and baby!  As a fellow emergency c-sectioner, I can relate to the feeling that what I had prepared for was ultimately out of my control.

  • Congrats!  I'm glad everything turned out ok and you have your DD here :)  Enjoy!
  • Sweet Jeebus, you're a trooper! Sorry it didn't go the way you wanted, but many, many congrats on the safe arrival of little Giselle. I can't wait to see pics of her.

  • I had a similar experience with my first baby.  It sounds like the baby was posterior.  First labors are hard enough without the OP position.  I am glad you are feeling okay with things.  Did you OB prescribe an antibiotic?  Long labors followed c-s put you at risk for uterine infection.  I learned this after my first OB did not give me an antibiotic.  I hope you are able to get the rest you need to recover quickly.  Congratulations!

  • Whoa, 44 hours?!?  Owie!

I chime in with everyone else!  I'm sorry your labor ended up crazy difficult, but I am thrilled you ended up with a healthy baby girl!  I love her name, as well.

Sorry about the labor experience - but you took it so well. Thanks for sharing!

  • You sure are a trooper! If only we knew what was in store for us. Things would be so much easier knowing, hey I have to deal with 12 hours of labor. But since we don't know we try to hang on for as long as possible. I hung on for 3 hours of major pain. You are insane to hang on that long. LOL

I was also glad that my DH was able to see me when I was in labor pains that were shooting off the charts. He definitely has a new appreciation of me.

Giselle is a beautiful unique name you don't hear too often.

  • Wow! She is the most precious newborn I've ever seen (other than my own child, of course Wink

I'm glad you are both well but sorry your birth plan didn't work out as you had hoped. You had the intent and that is great - if you have a second child you could try again if  you want to.
