1st Trimester

Is it strange...

That my doc never checked my betas?  I've never gone through treatments or anything and never had any indications of a problem, but my first appointment is FINALLY on Friday (at 9w2d) and I'm a little concerned that this will be the first time I'll have it confirmed by my doctor.  I know they'll draw blood, have me PIAC, do a family history, a pelvic and pap, but other than that they already told me they won't do a Doppler and there is no U/S machine in their office.  Boring.  But, I'm still questioning why they never checked betas....?  Is this normal?

Re: Is it strange...

  • My doctor never checked mine either. I just got bloodwork done at my first appointment and it had a level but they never checked it again.

  • I don't know if it's normal, but I never had betas either.  I think that may be more common for women who have had some type of IF treatment or previous losses.  I did have an U/S a week after my first appt, I think that was their way of really confirming the pregnancy.
  • Unless you're considered high risk (past m/c, fertility treatments, ect), it's normal not to have your betas checked

Generally won't be able to hear the heartbeat on a doppler until around week 12.  And it's very common to only have one u/s covered around 20w (unless you're opting for the NT screen around 12w and/or you're high risk).

  • No beta checks for me either. I had bloodwork done, but no one ever called me about it (which is a good thing) to mention beta #s. One less thing to not obsess over if you ask me! Now I can concentrate on feeling sick, bloated, and wondering if everything is growing alright in there!
  • No beta checks for me either.
  • No betas for me either
  • my first appointment is tomorrow, actually.  It's a little frustrating because I have had a miscarriage before and they haven't even confirmed the pregnancy, let alone check betas.  My first ultrasound won't even be until at least next week.  I try not to let it bother me too much... I figure I've got this far, I can wait a couple more weeks to see our baby.

  • They didn't check mine at our first appointment. The doctors group that I go to only do betas in high risk preg or if there is a problem.
  • My first official appointment is on the 17th. That will be the first time they'll take my bloodwork.

I think you only get betas checked if you have problems (IF, past miscarriage, high risk, etc). Don't worry about it.

  • The only times my OB checked by betas were when I was m/cing last December, and during the current pregnancy's bloodwork - because I had a previous m/c.
