Questions if you've done breast milk and formula or combos of both.

This is a totally random question, but I thought you ladies might be able to answer and the post below reminded me that I had been wanting to ask! So, when I go out Nick gets bottle and I don't have much of a stash of milk at all in the freezer, so sometimes DH does formula and sometimes breast milk, sometimes he'll mix them for him. But he told me that he eats at least 4-5oz when it's breast milk and he's lucky if he can get him to do 3oz of formula. Is that normal? My first thought was just that it would be because he knows the taste of the breast milk, but I didn't know if there was something else I didn't know? I felt bad that he was eating so much less if we give him the formula, but I want him to be able to do both for when he spends time with grandparents, etc. if I don't have enough pumped milk to give them.

  • I've often wondered whether formula is more filling than BM.  Since the pumped BM contains both foremilk and hindmilk it may take a larger overall volume to contain the same amount of calories as a smaller amount of formula.  I experienced something similar with DS.  He doesn't seem to be bothered by the fact that he has eaten "less" so this is my rational for the situation.

  • We went back and forth from the beginning and I think Adam ate the same amount, but since I couldn't pump too much I'm not very sure. But he ate like crazy, I don't know that he ever declined anything in a bottle until he was much older. Of course, he spit up a ton too.

  • This probably isn't any help, but my DDs would generally eat around the same amount with either bm or formula (although they would last much longer between feedings with formula).  I usually ended up mixing about one part bm, one part formula though, so I'm not sure if the taste of one drowned out the other for them.  I also started this pretty early on, so they may have been used to the taste of a combo meal.
  • We're doing both.  Cole always eats less formula, about half as much.  It's heavier for them - he isn't required to eat as often when he has formula either.  Every 2-3 for breastmilk, every 3-4 for formula while he's still so little.
