So... opinions please!

DH has had some peeling around his eyes and swelling for the past few months. We thought it was just the dry weather so he was using lansinol and aloe vera to moisturize and heal it. He went to the eye doctor Saturday and she said it's contact dermatitis. She recommended changing all his skin products because he's allergic to something.

So, we got organic shampoo for him (tea tree and mint- smells AMAZING), Dove bar soap, different face wash, and is using Aveeno body lotion.

Anyway, should we change our detergent as well (All free and clear)? And is there anything else we aren't thinking of? Should we try a different contact solution (we use Costco brand)? Could it be our hand soap?

I just really want to get this figured out. He has SUPER sensitive skin so I'm thinking all natural, all organic products will be better all around for him (I've been meaning to have us make the switch anyway, so this is a good impetus!)

Re: So... opinions please!

  • I have very sensitive skin as well. My biggest issues come from laundry detergent/fabric softener. I suggest switching to either something like Sun and Earth or getting the no dye/fragrance detergent (any brand). And just from my own experience, Dove and Aveeno still have some harsh chemicals and could irritate his skin.

But it is really a trial and error thing. You won't know if he can/can't use it until he tries it.

  • Ooh, I hadn't thought of our dryer sheets... I've been meaning to order dryer balls anyway. Another thing to add to the list.

I REALLY hope this baby gets my non sensitive skin!

  • I had this EXACT same thing a month ago. ?I knew what it was immediately, since I had only changed one item. ?Stupid store had to be out of my product. ?Anyway I sympathize. ?It was painful!

I say, why not? ?Change it.?

  • I would probably change it honestly. Detergent is so often the cause of skin irritation issues.

  • I have incredibly sensitive skin and have to be very careful about what detergent I use. As long as I stick to the free and clear kind, of any brand, I'm okay and I also can't use dryer sheets. I use generic brands of contact solution and have never had a problem with any of them. I also use completely organic face wash and moisturizer, maybe try something other than the Aveeno and Dove. Hope you guys get it figured out, that does not sound like fun!

  • i'm very sensitive and get rashes very very easily from detergents... the F&C stuff is horrid on my skin. i only use the Arm & Hammer derm tested stuff w/ a bit of oxy clean mixed in. no fabric softener and no dryer sheets.

good luck switching over, hope he gets some relief soon.

I agree.  My DH has terrible, terrible eczema with 99% of the supposedly "free and clear" detergents, soaps, etc.  The Aveeno lotion is the only thing he can use--none of the soaps.  Dove is pretty full of fragrance still.

Be careful about changing too much at once--you won't know what one thing is an irritant.  I would change detergents first, then soap, then shampoo...
