So I haven't been on much lately because I have been so sick. I suffered through my first pregnancy with pretty bad morning sickness but this is definitely worse. My dr called in a zofran prescription for me and I finally gave in and took one after not keeping fluids down for 14 hours. I just don't feel comfortable taking it after reading scientific articles that clearly say there have not been any studies to determine effects to the fetus because ot would be unethical and all studies are on animals. ugh!
Re: Not so sure about Zofran
That is why I quit taking it in my first pregnancy - it wasnt helping enough to be worth it for me. Sometimes you have to go with your intuition and not just accept things blindly for short term benefit.
Yes, but most drugs don't have studies on pregnant women, because it isn't ethical to do studies on pregnant women. There aren't very many drugs, period, that are class A or B.
Zofran is given to a huge population of pregnant women. If adverse effects were being found and attributed to zofran, they wouldn't be prescribing it.
It's up to you, obviously. You just have to weigh the risks and benefits. For me, the benefits (being able to eat, drink, function, and not be in the hospital with dehydration), outweigh any unknown risks.
I hope you feel better soon...it definitely sucks!
I have been really uncomfortable with this as well, but I admit, I'm taking the Zofran. My midwife, who attended my first unmedicated birth and will be with us throughout this pregnancy as well, recommended it. I asked her about safety and she said it was perfectly safe. I did not ask for studies, but I decided I needed to trust her on this one. She does not often encourage medication during pregnancy, and she supports as many unmedicated, natural remedies as possible. If she thinks Zofran is what I need, I guess I need it.
I'm still uncomfortable with taking it, to be honest, but I have a toddler to care for and work to be done, so I take it. I wish it worked better for me - it only takes the edge off - but I can function better with it than without.
It is a personal decision; I hope you can find whatever information you need to be comfortable with your decision.
Honestly, there is so much bad sh!t out there to worry about, you can't avoid all of it. People say to avoid sweet n low, but other artifical sweeteners are ok - no, they just haven't been around as long for anything conclusive to be determined. I still (rarely) eat something with an artificial sweetener. I made minestrone soup with non "organic" zucchini last night, and I didn't peel the skin off. My baby will not have two heads and flippers as a result.
Honestly, you're probably doing the kid a greater disservice if you can't eat as a result of the nausea, since you are depriving it of nutrients.
I wouldn't have gotten through my first two pregnancies without it.
