Annoyed at Pedi

I couldn't be more annoyed at my pedi right now. DS had his one-year checkup this afternoon and his weight falls within the 5-10%. He's perfectly proportioned and is very active, not to mention a big eater. He's been on finger foods since he was 10 months old and there's nothing he won't eat. He also nurses about four times a day, but is definitely transitioning to two or three times a day. My goal was to nurse for one year and I'm thrilled that I've made it, but I plan to continue to nurse in the morning and in the evening for as long as DS would like to. My pedi told me today that extended BF will continue to keep his weight down. He recommended I stop right now and just go with cow's milk full time. WTH? I thought I liked this guy. I'm glad my baby's not two months and I'm having trouble.

Re: Annoyed at Pedi

  • Yeah, i'd be pissed too!  My DS has always been between 5-10% (until a recent jump) and we left our first pedi because he said that I must not be producing or latching him correctly.  Rather than letting him make me feel like a failure, I rationalized that he was the failure and switched doctors.  Every pedi since then (we've moved often and seen 4) has told me that it's completely healthy for him to be on the smaller side as long as a: everything else is healthy and b: he's not actually losing weight.  I wouldn't stop giving him the extra nutrients of BM until I was ready but that's just me.

  • That would piss me off, too. Our pedi is always really pleased that DS is still nursing. DS is also a little guy (5th percentile for weight and height) and I figure as long as everything is proportionate, I won't worry about it.

  • That is a bunch of BS and a reason to start looking for a new pedi IMO. ? You really have to wonder how he can think extended BF (in addition to cows milk and other dairy sources) would be anything but beneficial to your LO.

?Edit- you should check out the WHOs growth chart for BF babies. ?The US one does not make a distinction between BF and FF although they should since it is pretty widely know that the growth is different between the two- especially after 6 months (check out kelleymom for more info.)

  • My mom always gave me the advice that our pedi gave her. They are DR's not the kid's parent, so a mom knows her baby better than the DR. You have to do what's best for you. If you child is developing correctly than you are good.
