Can smoke hurt me/LO?

This may be a silly question, and I know it would be best asked to my OBGYN, but I figured I'd try here first before becoming alarmed.

There's a wildfire around and it's been a couple of days of smoke in the area. Other than giving me a headache (a 2-day headache), I'd been fine. But I can taste the smoke in my mouth and I'm wondering if there's any chance it can hurt me/LO

I've been home for the must part, but I've been out with the puppies here and there.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your replies!

Re: Can smoke hurt me/LO?

  • I'd think that it could be possibly harmful... depending on what is burning.

I mean, I know you said wildfire, but really there is no way of telling what kinds of plants and all that are burning and what kind of toxins might be released from them.

Definitely call and ask if you should be concerned.  Otherwise, try and stay closed up indoors as much as possible so you aren't directly breathing the smoke.

  • I'm gonna say that I don't think it would especially if its natural stuff burning like trees and bushes. But if there are homes burning and plastics there may be things that are giving off chemicals. You may not even smell them and I dunno if by the time they reach you if it's hazardous. Can you keep your windows closed and the AC on until it passes?
  • Well technically breathing in any smoke is not healthy for anyone's esophogus or lungs, but this is when you are actually breathing in visiable amounts of smoke. If this wild fire went on for weeks it could possibly be a health concern.

Over all I would say that if your indoors most of the time you'll be just fine. Check with your OB just to be safe, but I think you're probably handling it in a safe way.

  • I'd say call your OB...and maybe get an HEPA Air Purifier and crank it up.
  • Thanks for your replies, ladies!

If tomorrow morning is as smoky as it was today, I'll call my OBGYN. In the meantime I'll stay inside.
