Rookie here: Prefold question

Are there any covers out there that you can just trifold a prefold diaper into? I like that prefolds are so affordable but I don't like the idea of having to fold a prefold, use a snappi and then put a wrap on. Seems like a lot of steps. I feel like I've seen covers where you can just prep them with a tri-folded prefold and put it on in one step.

Or similarly, can you put prefolds into pocket diapers as inserts??

Re: Rookie here: Prefold question

  • You can trifold them either in covers or as inserts for pocket diapers.  Generally, trifolding in covers tends to dirty the covers fairly often with nb poo.  So, if you plan on doing that with covers in the beginning, I'd have at minimum 6 covers, probably closer to 8.

To be honest, I'd get a snappi and try it out - once you get the hang of it (and there is a slight learning curve) it's well worth the extra 10 - 20 seconds you'll take fastening the pf on your nb.  A toddler who squirms around when you're changing him - that's another story, but I still love my pfs.

  • You can trifold a prefold into pretty much any cover that it'll fit into.  I do this alot with my infant sized prefolds and size small covers.  I prefer to do this with covers that don't have the shiny side of the PUL facing baby's skin since that can be irritating to it.  Imse Vimse covers are great for that.  But in a pinch I've used a Thirsties cover with no issues.

Main thing is when you move into larger sized prefolds they often have excess length that would hang/fold over the snappi in front.  You might have a hard time just trifolding at that point, although I bought some used PFs that had been serged into a shorter length and I can use them trifolded in medium covers now too.  Very nice.

And yes, you can stuff pocket diapers with prefolds.  Some prefer it to microfiber inserts because prefolds don't develop the ammonia stink that microber often gets.

    Hope that helps!  :o)
