stomach virus remedy - boiled water?

DD had a stomach virus last week.  She vomited for a day and has had lingering diarrhea.  She's not wanted to eat too much, but I have been able to keep her hydrated and she's on the mend.

My MIL kept telling me to boil water and give it to her and that it would get rid of the virus.  I asked her if there is something to add to the water and she says to just boil it and let it cool and give it to her in a cup.  The pedi told me to stick with things like pedialyte and gatorade because of the electrolytes and not just plain water.  I've been following dr orders.  Well, DH and MIL are both very upset with me because I won't do the boiled water thing.  Since she's not eating much I just want her to have pedialyte.

Anyone ever heard of this?  Am I crazy for not doing it?  It just didn't sound right to me.  I'm stubborn though and my pride might be getting the best of me.  I'm also not a fan of DH running to MIL for this kind of thing either.

  • i'm sorry, that really made me giggle.

i'd be cutting the gatorade and pedialyte with water to lower the sugars (which could exacerbate the diarrhea)

ETA-you could boil the water, if it would make your DH happy. actually, have him waste HIS time boiling it.  then cool and add to the pedialyte

::sigh::  Yes, I know it is ridiculous.  I was a little embarassed to post it. Embarrassed I am cutting the pedialyte with water (half and half).  I forgot to mention that.

  • I love your daughter's name!

A friend at work, who is from Cameroon, told me they use this as a remedy for all baby ailments and swears by it. He said his doctor almost fainted when they told her they gave his month old daughter water!

I can't see how water would hurt...you give her water anyway, normally, right? But follow your mommy instincts (or just tell them you did it - they won't know!).
