Pregnant after 35

Newbie Intro & Question

Hi. Just wanted to intoduce myself.

Just took a HPT (ok 3 HPT's) last Friday night which confirmed PG.

I will be 38 years old at the end of the month, and this is my 1st PG. I called the OBGYN, and they won't see me until 8/20. I tried to stress that I am over 35, but my OBGYN was not concerned. I guess I am just worried.

Is it normal that they wait the 8 weeks before an exam even if you are over 35?

Re: Newbie Intro & Question

  • Welcome and congratulations!   I am 39 and this is my first.  When I called my OBGYN, they had me wait until 10 weeks.  I met with a nurse practitioner at 8 weeks to go over family history and pregnancy 101 basics, but she felt there was no compelling reason to get in any sooner based on my history.

This is a wonderful board and you will find many great ladies here to help you along the way and share your journey.

  • Congrats and welcome!

I am 36 and this is also my first and my OB wouldn't schedule me until 9 weeks.  I even tried to scam my way into getting bloodwork done just to make sure my levels were doubling...but they called my bluff!   I was told that Insurance generally only paid for the initial bloodwork if there was threat of a miscarriage. Hmph!  The waiting is terrible but you'll get there.  My appt is next week...can't wait!

  • Welcome and congratulations!!

My OB wouldn't see me until 10 weeks and couldn't care less that I am over 35 (36 now and at delivery). It's just a non-issue to him ashe doesn't do anything different except maybe point out a few risk stats when talking about testing options.

If you're healthy and don't have any risk factors just being over 35 doesn't make the pg high-risk.

  • Welcome and congrats on your pregnancy!!

Yes the wait is normal.  Try not to stress about it just bc you are over 35, that's not necessarily a reason to be concerned.  The majority of women on this board have completely normal and healthy pregnancies.  H & H nine months to you!

  • I'm 35 and was also told 8-10 weeks, but call if something doesn't feel right.  I was having severe lower back pains around 6 weeks and went in for my first appt and U/S then - everything was fine.  Also see if you can talk to a nurse about the do's and don't so you are started on the right track.  Congrats!
  • I was 38 when I got my BFP (am 39 now and days away from my due date) and while my OB did see me at 6-1/2 weeks I was told the norm was around 7/8 weeks.

So it's normal to not be seen until then. And, actually, there's not much to see before then.  Just make sure you ask about any additional testing?the Nuchal Translucency Scan, etc.?at your visit.  If you don't know what they are, we can help there. The only reason I mention this is because certain tests need to be given at certain points of your pregnancy.

Congratulations and welcome to the board!

  • hi there, fellow newbie!  congrats to you, too!  i had the same experience last week w/my ob, and they just said, tough, she'll see you when you are 6-8 weeks.  it's killing me to wait!  it'll be even harder to wait for the little one to be big enough to actually see on the first u/s!!

  • I had a m/c prior to Emerson and so they gave me an internal u/s about 5 weeks to make sure it was where it needed to be and then another u/s to check for the heartbeat at 6wk/4days.  I elected to get the CVS testing so, I had another u/s at 10 weeks.

I'm not pregnant again yet but, I would call your dr's nurse and explain your situation and concerns.  I know that she would get me in sooner than the lady that answered the phones in the office.  GL.

  • Thanks so much for the warm welcomes and encouragement. I am trying not to worry too much, but it's hard.

  • I had one earlier, but only because I have had two ectopic pregnancies and those get very dangerous way before 8 weeks.  Even so, those first appointments weren't very exciting, they were just to make sure nothing was going to explode.

  • Congrats and welcome!  I saw the doc at 6 wks, but we were going through fertility treatments so that is the only reason.  Try not to worry, a lot of the women on here did not see a doc until 8-12 weeks along...

  • CONGRATULATIONS!

I am not sure what's normal. My first exam was weeks- 3 days after I got my BFP.

  • Congrats!

I didn't get in for my first appointment until I was around 10 weeks along.

  • Yes it is normal! They treated me like every other under 35 patient. Of course with the exception of testing. I guess that's a good thing?! Congrats!
