are you worried about stretching out your regular shirts? would it make sense to buy some longer shirts in bigger sizes before going into maternity or is that just an extra set of shirts for a few months?
I bought some perfect t's (non-maternity) from Old Navy when I was about where you were, and they have been worth every penny. I got it in 4 different colors and bought basic camis that coordinated with each shirt. They have literally been perfect because they are nice and long and stretch to grow with my belly. Many maternity shirts are still too big and tent-like on me, and I prefer to flaunt my bump.
ETA: Also, the shirts were pretty cheap. I think the t's were $10 each and the camis were $5 each.
I bought some shirts in a size larger and I'm wearing them. They are longer and have tons of room to grow. I won't be buy maternity shirts for a long while and by then I'll just need some sweaters for winter anyway.

I wear mostly baby doll style shirts at this point that have a lot of room in the belly area. When it gets to the point of stretching my shirts out, I will probably buy maternity, but I think I have some time for that at this point. I am just trying to get away without buying a ton of shirts for all the different seasons I will be pregnant in.

I can see both sides of this. I still wear regular shirts sometimes, though most are too short at this point. Having larger-sized non-maternity shirts (or mat shirts that you wouldn't mind wearing even if you weren't pg) will probably be somewhat useful for the way back down. But you may want to think about whether they would be at all nursing friendly if you plan to nurse.
I wear a mix of maternity and regular shirts right now. Some of my stretchier t-shirts still fit and they don't feel like they are being stretched out, right now they are snug around my belly and will probably not be wearable in the next couple of weeks.
So far I haven't really needed maternity shirts. I have a couple, but most of my shirts are longer because I had a pooch before I got KU so I would buy them a little bit large. There are a few that I think I will need to retire, but so far so good.

My mom keeps telling me if I keep wearing my pre-pregnancy clothes I'll stretch them out. So far it's true, I have two tank tops I almost live in and the straps have stretched quite a bit. I've already had to get larger panties, I've started buying a size larger for shirts, or at least getting longer ones, and have two pairs of maternity jeans and shorts now. I've been putting the pre-preg clothes in boxes.
I bought some t-shirts at Motherhood Maternity that have ruched sides. Even though I don't have much of a bump yet, they are super adorable and fit just like a non-maternity shirt would!
I bought them as an extra set of shirts to wear for a few months. I wasn't really worried about stretching my old shirts out, but wanted to flaunt my bump a little more comfortably. I also have the B bump so I didn't want to show that as much like the tighter shirts were doing.

I agree about flaunting the bump! I'd rather show it off rather than swim in a maternity shirt and make people wonder is she or isn't she?
I bought some comfy lounge around shirts from Baby Gap that are great! As far as my tight regular shirts go, I don't wear them! The only one's I wear are the big blousy ones or the empire waist ones that I have. A lot of the fashions right now are just that style so I haven't had to buy maternity yet. I've also been wearing a ton of summer dresses that help. Rue 21 has a lot of cute tops that I can definitely wear as maternity- I just buy a size up and it works out great.?
I was over weight to start. I have some realy cute but very hugging cami's that I bought last year that NOW i love wearing with nothing over them because my belly isn't a B shape anymore! Screw stretching them out! I'll probably go back to not loving my body again after this pregnancy so I'm showing off my beautiful belly while I have it!
That being said-I put a few of my favorite shirts away for now. I have been wearing maternity shirts for about a month.

Last week I realized that I was streching out some of my tank tops that I wear regularly and decided to buy some maternity tops. I found cute stuff at Kohls in the maternity section and they were on sale. I got 2 camis with belly room, but still fitting to show off the bump, and some shirts that have ties in the back so I can make them form fitting and then loosen as I grow. I also decided to box up all my prepreg clothes and store them in the garage so I would have to look at them when deciding what to wear. Just makes things easier!
I have bought a few regular shirts in bigger sizes, because I've found stuff that's cuter than what I can find in maternity sizes. A lot of my pre-preg shirts can't be worn now because they are just too short and don't cover my belly. If I'm at home or out and about running errands, I will grab one of DH's shirts, I'm not worried about stretching those!

I bought T-shirt and tops the same size or one size bigger, but only because all my regular shirts are too short since I popped.
EDIT: Non-maternity t-shirts and tops!
