moms with peanut allergy kids

mil fed M peanut m&m's this weekend.  that's another story ... she knows full well about the allergy, just wasn't thinking.

so anyway.  M had no reaction.  we gave her the zyrtek immediately (per allergists instruction) and had the epi-pen ready.  Thank God nothing.

Do you think I should call the allergist and see what he has to say?  This happened Sat. and I'm presuming it's out of her system.

I don't know if it's a good sign that she didn't have a reaction or just a "it didn't happen this time" type of thing.

She has an appt. late in Sept. for a ck-up.

Re: moms with peanut allergy kids

  • Mitch had a horrible reactin right after he turned 1 year old....and we avoided peanuts for a year...at his 2 year appt. the doc did a blood test, and he was over the peanut allergy...I was SHOCKED and afraid to give him peanuts...but we did and nothing...in fact DH ran out and got the biggest jar of peanut butter as soon as the doc called (on a Saturday morning no less...I love our doctor)...and that jar was eaten in a week because we all had missed peanut butter so bad!!!!

Sooooo--Im guessing maybe she's grown out of it????  Hopefully????

  • HOWEVER--that doesn't forgive your MIL for being careless!!!! I'd still be po'd!!!

  • If nothing happened I probably wouldn't call now, just mention it at your appt in September and see what he has to say.

Dd does have a peanut allergy that appears to be mild (her doctor didn't even give us an epi-pen prescription.) Our pediatrician said that if we're careful to avoid peanuts now that there's a chance she'll outgrow the allergy when she's older. She did say it's less likely that she'll outgrow it than something like a milk allergy, but that it's still possible.

  • You can have a food allergy and not have a reaction the first time you have the food, but later have reactions. I would wait for her next checkup and re-test for the allergy then.

Something like 30 percent of kids with peanut allergies do outgrow them, so it's a good sign she didn't have a reaction. DS has a peanut allergy that is supposed to be pretty severe. I accidently gave him chicken nuggest cooked in peanut oil once and he didn't have a reaction.

  •  I think it just goes to show that anyone can be careless about allergies.  It's just so easy to pop food in your mouth.

She did have a reaction to pb when she was 11 months.  I don't know if she actually ingested any of it ... the pb was for my apple on the same plate as her crackers.  I truly, truly hope she grows out of it.  I wish all kids would never get food allergies.

I think we'll wait until Sept. to find out more.

I've read that peanut oil is so refined that many people with peanut allergies, even fairly severe ones, are fine with it.

Yeah, I've heard that too. My sister is allergic to walnuts though, and almost died after eating a chicken wing cooked in walnut oil.
