NBR: My 5yo needs a renal ultrasound

This is baby related, but not about this baby.  My 5 year old had a kidney infection 2 weeks ago that was misdiagnosed as a UTI.  When we followed up with her ped last week, they ordered a renal ultrasound.  I just scheduled it and found out she has to go to the hospital to have it done.  I don't know why, but I am a wreck now knowing that it is at a hospital and not an outpatient facility.  It is still an outpatient procedure, but the facility I thought we were going to doesn't have a machine for anyone under 6.  Just needed to vent.

  • Don't worry!  My daughter had one when she was about 10 months, also at the hospital, and it was not a big deal at all, it took hardly any time, and was not scary for either of us. I know it's worrying for your child to have to have any kind of medical procedure, but this one is really not bad :-) Good luck!
  • I agree, try to think positive! DS had one several months ago. He has kidney reflux, and I got worried because he hadn't urinated in almost 24 hours. So they did an u/s. It was painless for him. I hope it all turns out ok for your little one!

  • I'm in my last year of medical school (studying to be a Pediatrician) and we do an U/S on every kid below the age of 6 who comes in with a kidney or bladder infection. Just standard precautions. Most of the time there is nothing of importance. Just have them bath daily and stay away from bubble baths.
