2nd Trimester

XP from 3rd tri: Have we talked about the Swine Flu vaccine?

(I'm posting this over here since you all are due a little closer to flu season)

I just had a reporter from the local paper call and interview me about my opnion of the swine flu vaccine and whether or not I would be willing to follow the CDC's recommendation of all pregnant women receiving the vaccine.

So anyway, it's pretty easy for me to say I don't want the vaccine because I'm due in September, I don't have any other kids in the house who could contact it from classmates, and flu season probably wont kick into full force for another couple of months.

Anyone think they will get the vaccine?

Re: XP from 3rd tri: Have we talked about the Swine Flu vaccine?

  • If I wasn't pregnant, I would probably get it only because I would have a new baby.  I don't ever typically get even the regular flu shot, but my midwives have urged me to.  However, I'm not comfortable with getting the swine flu vaccine and not knowing the effects it could have on my baby.  I have an appt in a week and will talk with my midwife about it.

    Yep.

It's interesting to see the same question asked on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd tri boards because the answers seem to be so different.  Otherwise, I have no reason to be over here lurking to see if the topic has been discussed.

  • I'm scared either way. I don't want to get swine flu, but on the other hand I don't really want to get a vaccine that has been developed so quickly that they will not have time to adequately test it on people first, kwim? I know this is bizarre, but my mom said that in the seventies they gave pregnant women some drug that made their babies come out with deformed arms! Yikes! I might just take my chances . . .
  • Hey Sare! :-) You're almost 35 weeks!!

I am going to ask my doctor about the vaccine...but otherwise I do NOT plan on getting it. It has been discussed on this board and some people thing its stupid to not get it and blah, blah, blah....I have never gotten a flu vaccine before and I don't plan on getting one until my doctor tells me I HAVE to. I did get the flu earlier this year, but I treated it the same as I would any other cold with rest, fluids and OTC medicine. If I was to get the flu while pregnant I would definitely seek medical attention, to make sure I'm closely monitored and not putting me or the baby at risk.

  • I will be talking to my Doctor about it this week, and then making a decision.

  • I will go with my doctor's recommendation about getting it or not, but more then likely I will get it.

To my understanding which may be faulty, the swine flu vaccine is basically the same flu vaccine people have been getting for years just modified for the new strain.  The makers of the regular flu vaccine change the composition every couple years or so when more prevalent strains emerge and there isn't this debate over whether it is safe or not. People are acting like this is brand new technology.

  • I think I'll get a regular flu shot but not the one for swine flu beause it hasn't been tested yet. Although, I have my OB appointment at the end of the month and I'll see what he has to say about it.
  • My OBGYN told me he would rather I get it, especially since I'm traveling to Mexico in a month. So I will.
  • My MIL actually called way to late last night to let me know that it is being recommended for women who are pregnant...like I didn't know that.  My concern is that every time I have gotten the flu shot, I have actually gotten the flu.  Every year that I have not gotten the shot, I have not gotten the flu.  This of course makes me hesitant.  I meet with my doctor on the 17th and will be discussing it at that point.  I am not thrilled about taking any meds during my pregnancy and haven't thus far.  If my doc says do it though, I guess I will.  We have also been discussing this in my house at naussium and I still have no definitive answer!

THANK YOU!! YES! This is totally true. I will definitly be getting the vaccine. I have always gotten a regular flu shot & this year I will just do the swine flu. Same shot, different strain!!! I DEFINILTY think the benefits outweigh the risk.

  • I never get the flu and therefore have never seen a reason to get a flu shot. I don't think I'll be getting this one either.
