Re: Question about GD test

  • You drink a bottle of "Glucola" and an hour after you are finished you have your blood drawn.  The passing range varies (slightly) from OB to OB, but anything 140 or below was "passing" for my OB.

If you result is higher, you will have to do the 3 hour test. From my understanding you have to be fasting for this one. You get your blood drawn before you drink the "Glucola" and then after the first, second, and third hour.

If that, too, is high than you officially have GD and will have to follow a special diet and MAY have to take medication to control your blood sugars.

  • I have mine at my next visit too =(
  • They're not bad!  The nurse practioner I saw at my first OB appointment made me take one at 8 weeks pregnant.  Yes, 8 Weeks!  She did this because I am overweight, though I've never had a problem with diabetes... my # ended up being really good at "89" - as previous poster said, anything below 140 is good.

Also, though everyone said how nasty the drink was... it tasted like an orange "Crush" to me.  The waiting part was the worst but DH met me at the lab which made it go by much faster!

I'm sure it'll be no sweat... good luck!

I have such a sweet tooth, that I didn't think the glucose drink was too bad either! I had to take the test at 7 weeks--same reason--overweight, and my blood sugar was high at my annual exam, just a month before. I failed the one hour, but just barely. I almost failed the 3 hour, but was saved by the last test. Good luck, and don't sweat it--there's really nothing you can do at this point to "control" the number anyway.

  • I had one at 18 weeks and passed.

I have my next one right before my 28 week appointment.

Usually GD shows up later in pregnancy, so passing the early test doesn't mean you won't test positive later. ? Good luck!

  • Hmmm... I'm quite overweight around 50 pounds and I still haven't had my test.

  • well, since you know what to expect from the 1 hour and the 3 hour....I will tell you...since I got sick in the middle of my 3 hour one they could only use the fasting sugar and the 1 hour before I threw up and I just failed.  I got 180.  But the numbers were pretty far apart for my docs liking so she sent me for a test called post prendial.....you get your fasting blood drawn then you leave gohave a meal of your choice:) and then 2 hours after your last bite you got back and get drawn again.  I took it saturday hopefully that worked.  My nurse friend just told me they have a test call HA1C that can test suagrs for past 2-4 months!!!!  I may be down that rode....what is more blood draws I am so used to it now.  Good luck at your test.
