Best Crib Mattress & Thoughts on a Used Mattress

My sister has given me her Sealy Ultra Soft Crib Mattress (150 coils) to use for my LO that is due in Dec. The mattress was bought for and used by my nephew who is now 4 years old. Would you think its okay to use this? I thought nothing of it until i read that its not recommended to use used mattresses beacuse it increases the risk of SIDS. I cant tell if its "worn out" or still firm because Im not sure what its supposed to feel like. I can always go to the local BRU and just feel the ones they have and compare, but I wanted ya'lls thoughts.

Also, what brand mattress are you guys buying? Is there a "better" brand or a more recommended one that I should look at?

 Thanks so much!!

Re: Best Crib Mattress & Thoughts on a Used Mattress

  • We also have a used mattress. I am not worried about it becuase it was only used for about 1 1/2 years.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm up in the air about this.  So many people use mattresses from their first children for 2 and so on.  So you would think it would be okay.  Check the firmness of the mattress.

BTW, DD is 5 and has her crib mattress on her toddler bed (same size) and we are not sure if we will use it for the baby or not.  Hard decision.

  • My parents keep trying to give me the one they've used on all 3 of their children so... it's over 23 years old.

    Hell no.

  • My mom is pushing this too! And, the crib! I have told her over and over about how dangerous this could be and she is just not listening!

I was planning on using a "used"mattress too. I didn't know they recommended against it. Will have to look into it further. Thanks for the info!

  • I am not risking a used mattress just because I would never forgive myself if I didn't do everything in my power to keep my baby safe. That is one thing people tell me, do NOT get a used mattress...

  • I probably would get a new mattress, only because of the age and the increased risk of SIDS associated with used mattresses.

DD and DS used the same mattress, but this baby will get a new one.  So yeah, I'm a bit wishy/washy on the issue, but a new mattress will give me better peace of mind.

  • may be flameworthy... sorry in advance :/ BUT...

i think the idea that a used crib mattress can cause SIDS is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard!!!!!!!!! i could barely believe my eyes when i just read that!!! HOW ABSURD.

moving right along... i think that if your sister feels comfortable enough about the mattress to even offer it to you, then it would be worth using. i mean really, adults and kids use regular bed mattresses for decades (not me, but you know what i mean) so i don't see how a crib mattress is much different. granted, as PP said, i wouldnt use a 23 year old crib mattress, but safety regulations have come a long way since then.

that being said, save yourself the money, and go for it :)

This exactly.  I've bought a crib and matching dresser off craigslist and will be happily using the used mattress as well.  It's not soft or squishy or anything.

There will always be folks who will buy all new stuff for their baby just because and they'll feel superior for it.  Good for them and not my problem.

  • Hhhhmmm....okay, thanks guys! I will do some more research, compare it to new ones, and make my desicion from there. I thought it seemed odd too that the SIDS could be related, but apparently they have done research studies and there is some correlation between the two. Who knows??? I may save the $$ and use it....Im def gonnna compare it to the firmness of a new one though! Thanks again!

  • if you're comfortable with using it, then I would use it.  My crib does not convert to a toddler bed, so I plan on using the crib and crib mattress for #2.  there is no difference between that or using your sister's mattress.
