How to store lettuce?

It's been a while since I bought a head of lettuce.  I had been buying the prepacked bags but I noticed I couldn't stand the smell the other day anymore.  I bought iceberg today just because.  I want to take the core out and wash and store it so I can grab and eat.  How do I store this?

I usually just take and slam the lettuce on the counter core side down to loosen it, grab the core and twist and pull it out. I then rinse the lettuce, holding it core side up so the water can work its way through the leaves. Drain in strainer, and cut into wedges. I usually put a clean dish towel in the bottom of a storage container, put the lettuce on top and stick in the fridge. Usually lasts about 3 days.
