not sure if we're pushing this re:naps

dd went the last 3 days with one nap only in the afternoon, but today she was a space cadet by mid-morning so we put her down.  it's been a stretch on the days she only takes one to get her to stay awake past lunch.  should we should stop pushing for one nap a day?

Re: not sure if we're pushing this re:naps

  • We are in the same limbo...one day she takes only one 1-hour nap, the next she's falling asleep 2 hours after she wakes up in the morning.  We're going with the flow right now & just putting her down when she's tired (but not letting her sleep past around 5, since her bedtime is 7:30).  I don't have any answers, but we're in the same boat :-(

  • DD was at one nap long before her first birthday. She sleeps great too.
  • I don't have any answers either -- DD naps just once a day for me (and fights even that one nap), but naps twice a day for her nanny with hardly any fuss.

So, some days she gets one nap and some days she gets two. On the days I put her down for just one nap, though, I do it between 10:30 and 11 a.m. -- would putting your DD down a little earlier help? Lily goes to bed at night at 7 p.m.

  • After about a month of going back and forth between one nap and two, DD finally has made the transition to just one.

I just followed her lead and put her down when she was tired. So I'd say you guys should just let her decide when she needs to nap.  It probably won't be much longer before she'll be only needing one nap every day.

  • This wasnt a quick transition for us either. It was a solid 6 weeks of going back and forth. It was a PAIN because I never knew what the day was going to hold so it was hard to make plans. It was very clear to us that he was ready though, he wanted his AM nap later and later and often refused his afternoon nap all together. I think you just have to follow her lead to make sure she's ready. My DS does best going down around 11:30 btw, any later and he is really overtired. GL!

  • We've been doing the one nap-two nap back and forth for a while now.  It all depends on when he wakes up in the morning.  The earlier he wakes up the sooner he's tired and he ends up taking 2 naps (like today).  If he sleeps a little later then he can make it until after lunch and takes only 1 nap (like the last few days).  I never know until I see the clock when he wakes up in the morning.

A while ago I had decided to set a schedule and "enforce" the one nap thinking that his body would get used to it and his circadian rhythms would adjust, but it never happened.  My new plan is "go with the flow".  It sucks not knowing what each day will be like, but you just can't fight it.  I figure at some point he'll be down to one nap permanently, but it doesn't seem like it'll be any time soon.
