Dang, it's slow. Help me with names?

So our top girl name choice right now is Angela June. MN is for my grandma and that is set, always has been. I'm trying to toy around with some of the possible nn for that name though. Though I like the name itself well enough, you know nicknames are also inevitable. I tend to like nn that aren't so obvious.

I'm thinking Annie or Ellie/Ella might make some good options. WDYT? What spelling seems most 'normal' for those nn?

My dad tried real hard to give us names that you couldn't make into nn. We beat him when we all got into school. My brothers and I all had nn. I went by HK since about 9th grade. So no matter how hard you fight it it happens. I'm sure whatever nn we end up using DC will find another at some point anyway. But it's another fun option to look at.

What about the names Penelope? Carolyn?

  • Penelope is an okay name, but it depends on how long of a name your last name is. It can be a mouthful.
Carolyn I like because her nn can be Carly which is real cute.

A good nn for the name Angela would be "Ella" or "Geelie" (someone at my work goes by Geelie and her name is Angela). However, I think most people will call her "Ang" because it seems more natural.

  • Oh I hear you, I always had the oddest nicknames.  I don't get Annie from Angela at all but I could see Ellie.  The one I came up with was Angel.

  • I guess I don't get where you get Annie or Ellie/Ella from? I am confused.
  • I think no matter what you try Angela will become Ang or Angie to some people.  You'd really have to drill in any other nickname.  Penelope... Penny of course.  Anything else and I think it would sound kind of forced.  Carolyn seems to me like the one I'd least likely use a nickname with, even though it's a long name.  But that's just me, I'm sure someone would refer to her as Lynn or even Caro.

That's good, I think I actually like Ellie better. I just though Annie might be a more natural pull from Angela.

    Angela= Annie, Angela=Ellie/Ella

I don't think I actually know any Angela's so I don't know what nicknames some have used before. Maybe it'll just be another good hard to nickname name. DS is Owen so I just don't see any there. Although we sometimes refer to him as O-man, since DH is sometimes J-man.

  • If you like Ellie as a nickname, what about Eleanor for a name?

DUH! I hadn't even thought of Ang/Angie. Hmmm.

I agree with this.  To be honest, I don't like how Angela June sounds.  I think Eleanor June flows/sounds much better.

And I think those nicknames would be a stretch to get from Angela.  I would think people would call her Ang or Angie.

  • Yes, I love Eleanor. DH has gone back and forth on that one. We just can't make up our minds at all when it comes to a girl's name. I've told DH I refuse to decide until if/when we have a girl born. Even then she may just be baby HK for awhile. ;-)

  • Sorry wasn't trying to be snarky just wasn't getting the connection. Every Angela I have known goes by Ang or Angie. I have never heard of someone going by Annie or Ella especially since you its pronounces with the "uhh-lah" not Ella. That is why I wasn't getting the Ellie/Ella connection
  • For some reasons I think girls names are so much harder than boys for me.  Maybe because I throw myself into the mix and think of what name I'd like to have had if I could have picked?

Maybe we're pronouncing if differently then too. I keep saying it to myself and I say it  An-Gel-La. Not that that really helps with nn, but I thought it was a different perspective to see.

Oh and no snarkiness taken. No worries.

That and DH and I just have such opposite tastes when it comes to girl names. My absolute fav is Matilda. I've even offered to let DH buy a fake Christmas tree if he'll let me use that name. Which is about the best bargaining tool I can think of.

  • I think Angela will be Ang or Angie.

What about Amelia?  I like how Amelia June sounds.

  • I <3 Carolyn (Carly for short).  if we ever have a girl, this is on our short list.

But I called it first so you can't steal it from me. Stick out tongue

  • Wow, I was really confused with this and had to wait to see other responses. LOL! Anyhow, with Angela, the ONLY nickname I would ever think of is Angi/Angie (or Ang). My BFF is named Angela and goes by Angi (thought it was more fun with no "e"). She chose the nn (and spelling) herself in elementary school.

In my mind, Annie and Ella are totally separate names and it would be a huge stretch to get them from Angela. I do love Ella as a name, though, although it's REALLY popular right now.

  • I don't really see Annie or Ellie/Ella as nicknames for Angela. I see where you got it from, but they all seem like totally different names from the original.

What about Isabella and call her Ellie or Ella?

    Ditto.

If we have another DD, we plan on naming her Isabella Kate and calling her Ella for short. I love that name.

I think Isabella June is cute. DD's name is Addison Jane and we call her Addie J as her nickname.

Amelia would be the name we'd take in a heart beat. But bro and SIL had that name if my nephew had been a girl. They said we could use it no prob, but after everything they've been through we just can't do that to them.

  • i might be the only one who thinks you can name her angela and call her ella for short. i think that is adorable. granted, most people wouldn't shorten angela to ella, but if you started it...no one can change it! :) i have a friend who named her daughter caroline and is calling her callie. those names seem completely unrelated, but since she started it, it stuck.

    good luck!
