I found a homebirth midwife!!!! eta - questions

I can't believe it. Now, I have to get DH on board who is VERY VERY VERY against it. I just want to explore my options. This lady may not be what we're looking for, but I just want to see.

Is there a list of things I should ask?

Anyone know how this works with insurance?

Re: I found a homebirth midwife!!!! eta - questions

  • I would ask again during the week when more of the people who had HBs might be on.

I really hope this works out for you!  A HB was always my dream.

  • My Dh wasn't so sure about it, but after meeting the midwife (who is very experienced, competent and awesome), he was totally on board.

This is a really helpful thread with lots of ideas for questions to ask. (And that forum, mothering.com, also has a lot of really great homebirth resources and information.)

My insurance paid part, probably about half, of the total fee. I think it varies a lot though.

ETA: My birth story is linked in my siggy. It was a really amazing experience and I am so glad I chose to have DS at home, as is DH. Congrats and gl!

  • I haven't gotten to have a HB since last time it was too much $ and insurance wouldn't cover it (and it wasn't until 24 weeks or so that I decided I wanted to look into it and they weren't that comfortable with it).  This time we're moving back home (same place DD was born) at 30 weeks so it's the same deal.

With out insurance, we'd have to have a CNM.  Too bad that there aren't any in the area.  There would be a chance that they'd cover a portion of the $3,000 fee, but only after the fact and we'd never know how much.  You'll have to talk to your insurance specifically, but depending on who it is and what state you're in, be prepared to have to pay just in case.

I am sad we won't be able to do it again, but maybe if we have a 3rd baby we will be in a better place as far as not moving/knowing what we want early on and being able to save.  Luckily our hospital birth went exactly as we wanted last time.  I'm just sad that this time I won't be at home that first night with DD and DH will have to stay with her.

    GL!

  • AWESOME! My insurance covered it--I owed $240 out of pocket (I had already met my deductibles).

mothering.com's homebirth forums have a great list of questions. I interviewed one and asked questions because she seemed incompetent, and met with another and didn't really feel the need to ask questions. I asked as we went along.

Even my family, who was against homebirth, were very pro-homebirth once they met my midwife. DH was supportive, though, and really into it.

  • If your DH is scientifically minded and willing to read, I suggest you have him read any of Henci Goer's books.  They might help persuade him.
