CD & umbilical cord

I'm new to the whole idea of cloth diapering and have ventured out this weekend to make a few purchases.  I bought 6 Chinese prefolds, 2 Thirsties covers, 1 Snappi, and one Happy Heinies pocket diaper XS.  Once the baby is old enough, I want to move him up to the OS pocket diapers since it's the most economical for us.  So, two questions...

1. What else should I start to add to my stash?  (I hope wash the diapers every other day.)

2. I will be using prefolds mostly on my newborn since I want to leave his umbilical cord uncovered.  With that in mind, I shouldn't use the Happy Heinies until the cord comes off, right?  Or is there a way to get around that?

TIA!

  • I'd just wait the week or two until the stump falls off before you use the HH.

And if you want to do laundry every other day I'd have at least 30 diapers and 6 covers or so total.  You might also want to get a wool cover or two give some extra breathability as a break from the PUL cover on occasion.  Not necessary, but nice.

A wool cover?  Won't it shrink, get stinky when wet, or make the LO's butt sweaty?

  • Nope to all questions.  Wool is actually wonderful!  There are a couple people on etsy that make great wool covers.  You may want to make a post asking about this.  I actually make my own but will be buying a couple for my upcoming newborn stash because tiredness is quickly taking over me at night to want to knit.
  • If you wash/lanolize wool properly (put in sink with tepid water, a few drops of baby wash or wool wash and a nickel size amount of pure lanolin like lansinoh and let sit for a half hour, gently wring dry between a towel and let dry...do this every 2 to 3 weeks).  Wool actually soaks and repels liquid at the same time.  Kind of hard to explain, but again someone might be able to do this better than I.  And it's actually very breathable, keeps baby bottoms cool without sweating.  So no worries on sweat.  I promise on that one. I put DS in his wool soaker on 90 degree days here and he does not get heat rash or anything.

No. Wool can breath unlike the PUL covers. You would lanolize the wool using a wool wash or lanolin to make your own wash and this would help it keep its water repellent properties. You would not wash and dry it with your diapers. You would hand wash it and hang dry. It doesn't need washed every single time.
