Eco-Friendly Family

Two questions: Homemade detergent & prepping diapers

1. Anyone know of a good recipe for homemade laundry detergent? I've seen some online but with cloth diapers I've heard you're not supposed to use borax or soap (which all recipes I've seen call for) because borax can cause rashes and soap leaves residue. We used to make our own but it had borax so for the time being I had to buy regular store detergent (and although it's considered eco-friendly, it's expensive!)

2. Also I am prepping my cloth diapers today and it says to wash them 4-5 times. Should I be using detergent every time? And also do I just continually wash them or do I wash, then dry (fully?) then wash then dry etc??

Sorry if that's a dumb question lol but this is so new to me! And even though my mom used cloth diapers back in the day I think this is a whole new ball game....

Re: Two questions: Homemade detergent & prepping diapers

  • as far as prepping goes, yes you want to use detergent each time.  and yes you should dry in between each wash as well.  i didn't dry them fully, probably about half dry, but i think the drying is important.

you do have a CD safe detergent, right?

also make sure you wash synthetic fabrics (microfleece, microfiber inserts, etc) separately.  these only need one wash.  same for PUL covers.  just one wash and dry.  don't mix them with cotton and hemp while prepping bc the oils from the natural fibers can get into the synthetics.
