Yesterday I began to have severe cramping that lasted 40 minutes ---the pain was shooting from my hips down to my abdomen. My husband took me to the emergency room where they did an ultra sound, took blood and urine samples and performed a cervical exam. Baby was doing well, my cervix was closed, and all blood and urine samples came back just fine. They called the OB/GYN on call and she said during her first pregnancy she experienced the same thing and was sure something terrible was going on, but sure enough they discovered it was just extreme round ligament pain. They sent me home with tylenol and an order for bed rest and lots of fluids. Sure enough, right after dinner the pain came back and lasted for 40 minutes again--it was excrutiating; I was pretty much doubled over in pain, crying, and cursing ( a lot). The pain subsided and came back again at 1:00 a.m. for another 30 minutes straight. During the night bout I managed to find some relief by getting on all fours and swaying my hips back and forth. I haven't had an episode since the 1:00 a.m. but still have a dull achey pain and random sharp pains. I'm going to see my midwife on Monday and hoping she has some better advice or input for me. Has anybody else experience RLP to this extreme? What did you do to help ease the pain?

Re: Prolonged Round Ligament Pain
well, not quite that intense - more like really really bad menstrual pain for two days at a time - very low, and intense but not excruciating. The first time was at 14 weeks - I was told it was the uterus changing position (retroverted to normal), then 18 weeks - I called again and found out it was probably my pelvic bones spreading (probably what you're feeling now). Then again at 20 weeks, and 23 weeks. Always on the weekend, which is great.
My doctor advised using a warm compress and she's definitely okay with me using tylenol - hopefully your midwife can give you some help!
